Summary:  American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE After-School Nature Club and River Coordinator to dedicate 12 weeks in support of Niobrara National Scenic River. The main duties include assisting with an after-school nature club for middle school students, giving programs, preparing equipment/sites for programs, and active student management. This opportunity is intended for conscientious, enthusiastic, individuals with an interest in developing their skills in interpretation and youth education.

End Date: November 3, 2017

Compensation:  The ACE interns receive a living allowance of $200/week for food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly. ACE interns may utilize travel reimbursement funds NTE $300 for approved travel costs ($150 for relocating to Niobrara and $150 for return trip). Housing will be provided to the intern at no extra cost.

Housing will be in a bunkhouse-style facility on the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, with shared rooms. Other temporary residents will include USFWS professionals and those the FWS invites. Free laundry facilities and a nice, large kitchen are included on-site.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for one 450-hour ($1,527.45) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required.

 

Position Description:

Primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • Conducting an after-school nature club for middle school students. This will involve assisting with coordination, assisting with giving programs, preparing equipment/sites for programs, and student management
  • Presenting Junior ranger programs
  • Assisting with ranger-guided canoe programs
  • Possibly giving or assisting with educational programs/field trips
  • Giving informal programs to visitors
  • Serving the visitor center desk

 

Qualifications:  Applicants for the position must hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as ecology, interpretation, education, natural resources management, environmental science, or related disciplines.

Required: 

  • Must be a US Citizen and Permanent Resident
  • Must be between the ages of 18 to 35
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with NPS resource professionals and their partners
  • Must be able to complete tasks well independently and on a team
  • Be in excellent physical shape, serve outdoors, day and night, and in adverse weather
  • Must have a valid driver's license, provide documentation of a clean driving record
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Proficiency in English is required

This position will likely have recurring (regular, scheduled or anticipated) access to vulnerable populations.  State and Federal Criminal History Checks will be required for participation

The interns must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with interpretation and education
  • Experience canoeing/kayaking (training will be provided)
  • Be able to answer repetitive questions in a friendly manner
