Summary:
American Conservation Experience, a nationwide Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Moab Field Office (MOFO), is seeking ONE Range Archaeological Intern to directly
assist the Archaeologists in the Moab Field Offices with completing cultural resource inventory associated with the Moab Field Office grazing allotment permit renewals. The Intern will specifically be assigned to the Moab Field Office and work independently to conduct field inventory, record cultural resource sites, and report findings to field office cultural and range staff.

Start Date: Spring 2018 (Late March/April Preferred, but flexible for the right candidate)

End Date: 23 Weeks from Start

 

LocationMOAB, Utah
The BLM Moab Field Office has stewardship over 1.8 million acres of public lands in southeastern Utah. The Moab Field Office, tucked discretely away between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, it is located north of the La Sal Mountains and along the Colorado River, encompasses some of the most unique canyon country in the world.

 

Compensation:
$600/week Living Stipend. Housing will not be provided.
ACE will provide a vehicle while on duty however a personal vehicle is strongly suggested for use during personal time 

 

Project Background and Objectives: BLM Utah manages approximately 22 million acres of grazing land statewide. Rangelands provide a tremendous amount of social, economic and environmental value on a local, national and global scale. They are a great resource not only for people but also for all other living organisms that inhabit the area. Hence it is imperative to encourage and enhance sustainable practices to retain the value of such lands. To that end the federal government utilizes resource management plans and grazing allotment management plans to prevent excessive and unchangeable damage to these resources. The goal and focus of these plans is to improve and maintain conditions of rangelands by assessing and monitoring their health and making necessary changes to current trends and creating sustainable practices.

The objective of this internship is to provide meaningful experiences for young professionals while also providing a benefit to public land resources and its users. The participant will be instilled with an appreciation of natural resources, the benefits of cooperation, hard work and a sense of accomplishment with emphasis on a sound work ethic that will supplement their other educational opportunities.

 

Position Description: 
The Intern will work for the Moab Field Office and will be stationed in Moab, Utah.  The position is heavily oriented towards fieldwork, but will also be required to complete office work such as records filing, Geographical Information System (GIS) data entry, site form, and report production.  The Intern must be willing to perform physical labor while being exposed to summer heat, desert wildlife and plants, remote project areas, and other potential hazards commensurate with land management activities. The intern must also be comfortable operating a four-wheel drive vehicle across varying types of road surface.

The intern will work closely with field office cultural and range staff. The intern will work on many aspects of cultural resource management for the permit renewal EAs, including data collection, site recordation, monitoring, and reporting documentation for Section 106 of the NHPA compliance. Utah BLM policy (IM 2010-026) requires cultural and range staff to work closely to develop strategy for identifying cultural resources that might be impacted by livestock. The intern will work closely with range staff to identify areas of congregation, understand how the range improvement system works, livestock behavior, and how that behavior can impact cultural resources.  Workload is divided between field inventory; recordation, monitoring, and evaluation of prehistoric and historic cultural resources; and project documentation.

 

Field Inventory

Inventory areas will be determined by the inventory strategy and consultation with range staff. The Intern will assist in designing the specific survey strategy for each of the areas to be analyzed. Prior to any field inventory, a records search for the project area will be conducted by the intern to determine previously recorded cultural sites, inventory locations, and any previously recorded sites with documented grazing impacts.  The purpose of the field inventory will be to identify historic properties potentially affected by livestock use. The intern will be expected to work independently in the field and in the office, but will be directed and accompanied to the field by the BLM Archaeologist when possible or otherwise necessary. The intern will be responsible for providing weekly documentation of progress, acres inventoried, and resources identified, recorded, and monitored.

 

Recordation and Monitoring

Recordation of cultural resources will be in accordance with guidance from BLM handbook 8110 and in consultation with BLM Cultural Resource Staff. Monitoring of previously recorded cultural resources for impacts from grazing during field inventory is required and all site records will be updated, including location and sketch maps.  The intern will keep a log of all recorded sites as well as those that will be updated.

 

Documentation

The intern is expected to use GPS equipment and field notes to record findings and prepare GIS information and reports as requested.  Intermountain Antiquities Computer System (IMACS) forms will be completed electronically, including photographs from field visits of all cultural resources observed.  Provide cultural resources inventory report following the format provided by BLM Cultural Resources Staff.

The ACE Fellow may be required to work in remote areas of the field office. This includes driving four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATV). The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Lifting up to 50 pounds is required. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

 


Qualifications:
Applicants must have a degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.  A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. Master's degree is not required, but encouraged.

Applicant must possess a degree that includes 3 semester hours in general archeology, regional archeology/archeological cultures, theory and methods of archaeology, and archeological field school experience. Applicant must show they have received six hours of related course work in geography, geology, cultural geography, history or historical archeology, environmental studies, surveying, scientific writing, anthropology, American studies. Applicant can also qualify with a combination of the above-mentioned education and related archeological/culture resource management experience.  

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Interns must be 18-30 years of (candidates 31 to 35 with Master's degree's or higher are also encouraged to apply).
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check is required.
  • A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
  • Interns must have personal medical insurance for the duration of their participation with ACE.
  • Interest and experience in Archaeology Field.
  • Ability to hike in rugged terrain for 8 hours a day, if needed, in variable weather conditions.
  • Experience in documenting archaeological resources and cultural resources management, preferably in Four Corners and Great Basin regions.
  • Must have a high fitness level and a high comfort level in remote settings.
  • Experience with interpreting USGS topographic maps of various scales
  • Familiarity with National Register of Historic Places Criteria for evaluating historic properties
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision.
  • Experience using a GPS unit.
  • Experience with ArcGIS software
  • General computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Experienced photographer (photo editing).
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors and be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals.

  

Requested Qualifications: 

  • Experience in documenting archaeological resources and cultural resource management, preferably in The Four Corner's and great Basin regions.
  • Ability to apply GIS and related technology in support of cultural resource management.
  • Practical knowledge of the general land use-planning process and land management programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with planners, resource specialists, 
managers, and peer professionals in Federal, State, and local agencies.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in ArcGIS and GPS use, specifically Trimble Juno or Geo Series units with ArcPad and/or TerraSync Software.
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome.
  • Strong writing, research, public speaking, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Utah's public lands, cultural and historic resources, and natural environments is desired, especially the Four Corner's region.
