Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with New River Gorge (NERI) National River in West Virginia is seeking ONE Community Engagement Coordinator internship to serve for 12 weeks. This position will promote, support, and report on "Get Active in the Park", a program initiative in partnership with Active Southern West Virginia. Program activities may include stand up paddle boarding, meditation, yoga, tai chi, rock climbing, fly fishing, and more. Duties will include managing social media, maintaining a regular calendar of community programs, scheduling volunteers, managing program gear, and auditing in-park programs.

This internship opportunity is intended for enthusiastic, energetic students with a background and/or interest in parks and recreation management, environmental education, marketing and communications, nonprofit management, or other relevant field of study.

Location: New River Gorge National River, Glen Jean, West Virginia.

New River Gorge National River (NERI) is located in southern West Virginia and encompasses 70,000 acres and 53 miles of one of the oldest rivers on the continent. NERI is home to a vast array of natural and cultural resources. Renowned for its recreational opportunities, NERI host miles of hiking and biking trails, premiere white water rafting, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and camping.

Park staff also manages nearby Bluestone National Scenic River (BLUE) and Gauley River National Recreation Area (GARI). BLUE protects 10.5 miles of free flowing river and offers a rich variety of natural resources and history along the Bluestone Turnpike Trail. GARI protects 25 miles of the Gauley River and 6 miles of Meadow River. Known for its multiple class V rapids, GARI is one of the most adventurous rivers in the east.

Compensation: The ACE intern will serve 40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $250/week. Also, a $250 reimbursement is available for relocation or commuting expenses.

The intern will have use of a government vehicle for project-related travel, though a personal vehicle is required for time off and transportation to/from the park. Housing is provided at no cost to the intern by the park and consists of a furnished house located 6 miles from park headquarters and 13 miles to the nearest grocery store. Park housing has free Wi-Fi and limited cell service. Absolutely no pets are permitted in government housing. This position may earn hours eligible for Public Land Corps non-competitive hiring authority.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,538.36) upon successful completion of internship hours. Additional enrollment is required.

Position Description: "Get Active in the Park" is an innovative partnership between the National Park Service and Active Southern West Virginia. Trained Community Captains deliver free, beginner-level instructional programs to the New River Gorge region. "Get Active in the Park" empowers our community to see outdoor spaces as a place for health and wellness to take place.

This position will support the "Get Active in the Park" initiative by carrying out the following duties:

  • Schedule all summer programming.
  • Coordinate schedules with Active Southern West Virginia volunteers and NPS staff.
  • Collaborate with NPS staff to design, print, and distribute program marketing materials.
  • Draft and schedule event pages on Facebook for all summer programs.
  • Design and implement a new Get Active in the Park presence on Instagram and Snapchat.
  • Maintain an inventory of program materials.
  • Transport program materials to each program using utility trailer.
  • Clean and perform light repairs to program gear (i.e. filling bicycle tires, washing paddle boards, etc.).
  • Manage daily reservation line and email address for program reservations, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays (position will be given cell phone and ipad for reservation system).
  • Attend and assess elements of each program, using NPS metrics.
  • Maintain program statistics, reporting on attendance, volunteer hours, etc.
  • Intern may be encouraged to attend beginner-level programs including rock climbing, stand up paddle boarding, yoga, tai chi, guided hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, and more.


Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience parks and recreation management, environmental education, marketing and communications, nonprofit management, or related disciplines.


  • Must be a US Citizen and Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18-35 years of age (interns must be 21-35 to apply for any ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties.)
  • Must have a valid driver's license; clean driving record and the ability to provide documentation upon request, personal vehicle is required
  • Experience and/or willingness to learn trailer pulling is required
  • Ability to safely follow procedures used in the field
  • Desire to learn and apply new concepts
  • Ability to complete tasks well with others and individually
  • Must be able and willing to serve outdoors, in varying weather conditions and capable of participating in intense outdoor activities
  • Ability and willingness to follow a non-traditional schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to collaborate with others from diverse backgrounds
  • English proficiency required
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
