Interpretation and Education Internship 

Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front National Historic Site


Summary:  American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking one full-time youth intern to assist the NPS with various interpretation and education projects based at Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front National Historic Park in Richmond, CA. Serving on a team of Interpretive Park Rangers, the ACE Interpretation and Education Intern will help conduct interpretive, operational and educational duties throughout the National Historic Park and Visitor Center.


A full-time (40 hours/week) commitment of 19-weeks is required.

The ACE Intern will receive a $280 weekly living stipend plus $200 weekly housing allowance, contributing 40 hours per week ($480/week). Please note that the intern will be responsible for securing their own housing accommodations for the duration of the internship. 


Position Description:  

The Interpretation and Education internship is a trainee position.  The goal is for the trainee to become fully competent in are the discipline of interpretation and education according to National Park Service standards.  Responsibilities and duties will include:


  • Becoming knowledgeable of the history and features of the historical site;
  • Greeting visitors in the Visitor Center and providing accurate information;
  • Performing operational duties for the Visitor Center;
  • Researching and presenting public interpretive programs;
  • Participating in special programs and events;
  • Answering questions in person or on the phone;
  • Leading school groups in the park's educational program.

The internship position will be a Thursday- Monday work schedule.  


It is highly desirable that the candidate has strong presentation skills.  Experience with working with children is also highly desirable.


Position Requirements:

 Internship is available to US Citizens and Green Card holders only

  • Intern must be between the age of 18 and 35;
  • Experience in public speaking is a plus;
  • Intern must be able to provide own transportation to-and-from worksite base (Rosie the Riveter/ WWII Home Front NHP, Richmond, CA);
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Deep interest in ecology, history, and respect for nature is critical;
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors, in varying weather conditions;
  • Intern must commit to a schedule of no less than 40 hours per week;
  • Ability to relate well with youth and volunteers in the field and serve as leader, mentor and role model;
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences;
  • Willingness to work evening hours and weekends;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team to carry out tasks to completion;
  • A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation; 
  • Personal medical insurance for the duration of their participation with ACE;
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check;
  • Must be willing to wear ACE work shirt/gear while on projects;
  • The ACE intern must represent ACE and the NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner;
  • Must be able to work a weekend schedule.

  • Knowledge of the National Park Service (NPS);
  • Experience with outdoor education and youth leadership;
  • Strong desire to enter the public service field;
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged. Spanish is especially useful in this park.
