Summary:  American Conservation Experience (ACE), a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, Arizona, in partnership with the United States Forest Service (USFS) Eldorado National Forest,is seeking Two Wildlife Technician InternsThis opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in natural resource management and conservation. 

Start Date: March 3, 2019 (flexible for the right candidate)

End Date:August 16, 2019 (24 weeks from start)

Location: Georgetown Ranger District, 7600 Wentworth Springs Rd, Georgetown CA

 There are numerous opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, and backpacking within the Eldorado National Forest. Lake Tahoe and Desolation Wilderness are only an hour away and offer numerous opportunities for recreation. 

 Georgetown is located approximately 30 minutes from Auburn and Placerville, which are larger communities offering typical amenities, restaurants, and entertainment opportunities. Georgetown is less than an hour drive from Sacramento.

Compensation: The Interns should anticipate serving 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $693/week for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly. 

Government housing maybe available.

Position Description: The Eldorado National Forest is looking to fill a total of two Wildlife Technician positions. Field work could occur in the early morning, throughout the day, and/or into the night. The incumbent should be prepared for hiking over steep, arduous terrain in hot weather for long periods of the day. Additionally, candidates will have the opportunity to work with wildlife and aquatics staff to conduct field work for a variety of species (California spotted owl, northern goshawk, California red-legged frog, Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog, Yosemite toad, and Western pond turtle). Applicants should have experience using standardized field survey and data entry protocols.As opportunities arise, 10-20% of the interns' time may be scheduled to assist other program areas, in order to both accomplish high priority project needs and provide cross-training opportunities to the intern.

Duties and Desired Skills for Interns:

  • Ability to work independently at day or night including hiking, driving, following survey protocol
  • Experience driving 4x4 and/or all-wheel drive vehicles safely in off-road conditions
  • Experience hiking over remote, steep, and rocky terrain in adverse weather conditions (cold/hot temps, light rain, etc.)
  • Ability to navigate in remote areas using GPS, mobile devices, and paper maps
  • Flexibility in switching between day and night survey work (maintaining appropriate work/rest ratio)
  • Ability to work as part of a team to meet project goals, as well as independently to complete survey tasks
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and ArcMap
  • Office duties include data entry, summarizing and compiling data
  • Experience with amphibian or fish field work is a plus
  • Must hold a current and valid driver's license

Training Provided: The Forest Service will strive to provide the interns opportunities to shadow conservation professionals to learn about the wildlife and related disciplines, but a foundational knowledge of wildlife monitoring and/or management is required for these positions.

Project Environment: Applicants must have enthusiasm for working outdoors, a willingness and capability to work under arduous field conditions, good interpersonal skills. Work can involve long drives to field sites and extensive daily hiking often in steep and uneven terrain.  Qualified applicants will need to endure cold weather, snow, sun, heat, mosquitoes, poison oak, and long-hours (10hr work days). Positions will be primarily field-based but data entry and GIS skills are desired. Forest Service oversight in the field will be limited, which will at times require interns to take initiative to problem solve and determine priorities on their own/as a crew. Qualifications: Qualified applicants will hold (or be pursuing) a bachelor's degree in a natural resource field, and have experience with wildlife, either in the field or through coursework. This is a highly demanding outdoor job that requires substantial physical fitness and mobility, participate in the field, and a tolerance for extreme weather and demanding conditions.

Required:

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident. 
  • Must be 21 years or older in order to drive an agency work vehicle.
  • Ability and willingness to perform survey work during the night and day.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required at all times (documentation will be requested).
  • English proficiency required.
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check is required.
