American Conservation Experience (ACE) is a national, nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to providing professional development opportunities to young adults interested in pursuing careers in environmental stewardship and community resiliency. ACE aims to address critical environmental issues across the nation while providing its members with the necessary training, skills, and experience to potentially pursue a career in the fields of conservation or restoration. ACE crews assist several federal, state, local, and nonprofit land management agencies accomplish their critical environmental stewardship and restoration project goals. ACE's major federal partners include the National Park Service, US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management. ACE is currently seeking corps members for an AmeriCorps 450-HOUR commitment to serve at our Southern California branch.

 Start Date: May 19, 2019*      End Date: August 17th, 2019 

*A 450 hour (13-week) commitment is required once enrolled.  An early arrival of 5/18 or 5/19 is expected to facilitate settling into ACE housing and enable you to be prepared for your first full day of orientation.

Position Description: 

  • Volunteering for 10 hours per day for 4-8 consecutive days on a crew comprised of 6-12 young professionals in remote outdoor locations on public lands and conservation areas.
  • Working and camping in a variety of weather conditions including temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, high winds, intense sunshine, rain, and snow.
  • Serving on environmental stewardship projects including (but not limited to):
    • Trail Construction/Maintenance
    • Dry Stone Masonry
    • Invasive Species Removal
    • Forest Fuels Reduction
    • Fence Installation/Repair
    • Habitat Restoration
    • Historical Preservation
  • Hiking extended distances on steep and rough terrain with a 40-pound backpack.
  • Professionally serving on numerous volunteer events and projects in the local community.



Successful candidates will serve on meaningful projects throughout the region. Currently, ACE crews are working at the following locations:

  • Mount San Jacinto State Park outside of Palm Springs, CA.
  • Owens Lake in the Owens Valley near Lone Pine and Keeler, CA.
  • USFS San Gabriel Mountains National Monument east of Los Angeles, CA.
  • Bureau of Land Management public lands in the Mojave Desert adjacent to Ridgecrest, CA.



  • Provide a safe, strong, and proactive work ethic.
  • Possess a team-first, positive mindset and a passion for service.
  • Fully complete ACE AmeriCorps term of service and follow all ACE rules and code of conduct.
  • Professionally represent ACE while serving on all projects and local community events.
  • Attend additional community volunteer events during project off-days.
  • Perform duties in inclement weather on steep terrain without access to restroomor developed sanitation facilities.
  • Be able to bend at the waist for long periods, spend the entire workday standing or walking, and hike with 40-pound backpack.


Other Requirements:

  • This position is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or legal permanent residents only.
  • Must be 18 - 35 years of age.
  • Members must possess their own personal medical insurance for the duration of their participation with ACE.
  • ACE will provide tents but members will be required to provide other outdoor gear including but not limited to: full leather boots (no mesh), sleeping bags, backpacks, and durable rain gear.
  • Upon hire, all members must consent to a Criminal History Check. Their service with ACE will be considered probationary until all results are returned and have been reviewed.
  • Smoking will not be permitted when serving on project. Smoking may be permitted at ACE housing, but will be restricted to designated areas.
  • ACE maintains a zero-tolerance policy for drugs. Alcohol use is strictly prohibited on ACE projects and on ACE property. Any evidence of drug use or violating ACE's alcohol policy will result in immediate release from the program.


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Members receive a $280 bi-weekly living allowance.
  • 3 meals per day while on project (approximately 16 days per month).
  • Free housing accommodation and use of a tent throughout your term.
  • Upon successful completion of the 450 Hour program, members receive a Segal Education Award of $1566.14. More information regarding amount and eligibility, see the AmeriCorps website
  • Your 450 hours count towards preferential hiring status following their term of service. Corps Corps Members who have served a minimum of 640 hours on appropriate public land projects may qualify for Public Land Corps non-competitive hiring status!



While living and serving with ACE, we provide your housing at no cost, so you can spend time with your trusted crew members, explore our home bases, rest, and also avoid rent so you can focus on your field work! ACE is proud to be one of the few AmeriCorps programs offering included housing, a savings of over $500/month compared to a private room rental in most cities and towns, nationwide. Housing locations are in Dulzura, San Diego County or Ridgecrest, CA.
