Summary:  American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit conservation corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking ONE Cultural Maintenance/Gardening Intern interested in dedicating service to the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. The purpose of this internship is to assist park staff in improving the gardens around Jimmy Carter National Historic Site at Plains High School, the Boyhood Farm, and at the Carter Compound. This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic young professional who is deeply committed to the preservation of our national parks! 

 

Start Date:  June 2, 2019 (some flexibility exists for the right candidate)

End Date:  May 30th, 2019 (or 52 weeks from the start date)

Compensation: The ACE intern will serve for 40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $560/week for food, housing, and incidentals.  A one-time NTE $650 travel reimbursement will also be awarded.

 

Background: In order to fully appreciate the relationship between Jimmy Carter and the town of Plains, Georgia, there must be an understanding of the geographical features of the region in which they were both developed. The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site is located in what is part of the southwest Georgia Costal Plain's Flint River region which covers approximately 8,400 miles. The waters of the region contain various types of fish, such as catfish, bass, perch and carp. The woodland wildlife in the area consists of animals such as deer, turkey, duck, opossum, raccoon and fox. There are an abundance of birds in the area and include cardinals, bluebirds and bluejays.

 

 

Position Description:  Duties for this position will include:

 

  • Improving the gardens around Jimmy Carter National Historic Site at Plains High School, the Boyhood Farm, and at the Carter Compound.
  • Assisting in planting new flowers, bushes, trees in the gardens.
  • Helping with testing soils and applying appropriate mulch to the gardens.
  • Assisting in weed management at all garden landscapes.
  • Assisting with different types of gardens for the public to enjoy and see to improve the visitor experienced to the site.

  

Qualifications: Applicants must have a degree (or be pursuing towards a degree) in the natural resource management field or other related disciplines appropriate to the position.  A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. 

 

Required:

  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18 to 35 years old
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS
  • Must have a validdriver's license; clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation
  • A self-starter, independent, organized and motivated
  • Willing to perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions and have the ability to do some heaving lifting and sustained physical labor
  • Ability to carry out projects adequately with minimal supervision

 

 

Preferred: 

  • Interested in gardening and grounds maintenance
  • Strong desire to enter the public service field as a natural resource professional
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the NPS and other federal land management agencies

 

 

The interns must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.  Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
