Summary:

Based in Flagstaff, Arizona, American Conservation Experience (ACE) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit conservation corps dedicated to providing professional development and outdoor experiential learning opportunities to young adults (18-25) interested in careers related to environmental stewardship. ACE is dedicated to developing present and future generations of environmental stewards while protecting and restoring public and tribal lands throughout the nation.

ACE is seeking proactive, responsible, and enthusiastic young adults committed to working 12 or 24 weeks (450 or 900 hours) on outdoor conservation projects.

The ACE AmeriCorps Member program engages and motivates young adults seeking to broaden their horizons and expand professional knowledge in the field of conservation.  Corps Members share interest in environmental conservation, as well as a passion for working and camping outdoors. As a stepping stone to future careers in land management, ACE provides career development and service learning opportunities, while providing challenging, life-changing experience.  

Project Work:

ACE crews accomplish meaningful outdoor conservation projects alongside a variety of land management agencies including National Park Service, Bureau of Land management, US Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service. These partnerships provide unique and beneficial networking opportunities for all ACE Corps Members.

ACE projects typically include:

• Trail construction and maintenance
• Invasive species removal/habitation restoration
• Fence installation/repair
• Fire Fuels reduction
• Wildlife surveys

Successful candidates should expect to work 10 hour days over 8 consecutive days in remote wilderness areas followed by 6 days off in Flagstaff. However, applicants should expect the ACE project schedule to vary, including the possibility of participating on project for 4-6 weeks at a time. Crews should expect to camp while out on project. Members will be supported and mentored by professional skills trainers and leader throughout their terms. ACE Members will become proficient in trail construction/maintenance, habitat restoration, general worksite safety, Leave No Trace principles, brushcutter use, herbicide application, and resume building.  

As a federally recognized corps under the 21st Century Conservation and Service Corps, ACE members can generate non-competitive hiring status following their tem of service. Corps Member who have served a minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service on appropriate conservation project as define in the Public Lands Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 qualify for PLC non-competitive hiring status for competitive service positions in the Department of the Interior. This hiring status is a major benefit of taking part in the conservation corps and helps support ACE's role as a partner in developing the next generation of land managers.

Member Responsibilities and Expectations:

ACE places high standards and expectations for AmeriCorps Members. All interns are required to successfully complete their term of service and participate in a volunteer service project held within their community.

Corps Members can expect to work long days, and must successfully adapt to various climates and working conditions.  Proper safety procedures must be observed in all tasks, including the repair and use of hand and power tools used on projects. Corps Members serve in professionally supervised teams as they explore future outdoor careers, learn practical field skills, and develop confidence as emerging leaders in the field of conservation.

All ACE Corps Members practice environmental ethics, and are expected to work as a team in stressful situations or circumstances. Members are expected to be flexible and complete all functions of the job, including tough physical labor and hiking several miles to remote locations under adverse weather conditions.  

Compensation and Benefits:

ACE AmeriCorps Members receive a $110 weekly living stipend. Upon completion of a full term and depending on the length of AmeriCorps service, Corps Members will receive an AmeriCorps education award between $1,515-$2,865. ACE prevents financial hardship for its participants through providing free housing accommodation, tents, project transportation, and project meals.

Other Qualifications:

• Position is available to US Citizens and Green Card holders only
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Members must have personal medical insurance for the duration of their participation with ACE
• ACE provides tents and camp kitchen equipment to all members, but members will be required to bring all other camping items such as sturdy boots, sleeping bags, backpacks, and raingear.
