American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Phoenix District Office is seeking ONE Administrative Support Assistant Intern to dedicate 26 weeks assisting the BLM's Phoenix District Office.
The Interns primary responsibility is to serve as the first point of contact for visitors, answering both telephonic and in person inquiries. The employee is also responsible for the inventory and sale of informational literature, assistance with the management of records systems and mail, and assistance with the performance of a variety of collection and billing functions.

PLC Competitive Hiring Authority: 
This position is authorized by the Public Land Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 and expanded by the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013. Interns who meet basic requirements during their term of service may be eligible to receive their Noncompetitive Hiring Eligibility Certificate to be used when applying to future federal jobs. Requirements are: (1) Intern must be between the ages of 18 to 30 and (2) Intern must complete at least 640 hours on a federally approved PLC Project. Position Description: 

  • Public Information
    • Provides general information concerning Bureau operations to the public both orally and in writing. Contacts occur through telephone, 2-way radio, and personal visits. Answers many inquiries personally and refers others to the appropriate person. Sells maps and brochures. Serves as a backup to the District Office Collections Officer. Prepares appropriate receipts, records, and tracking forms, providing appropriate information to the Financial Assistant when applicable. 
  • Collections
    • As a backup for the Collections Officer, the incumbent uses the computer generated Collections and Billings System (CBS) to perform a variety of collection and billing functions including customer service, resource transactions and reporting.
    • By using CBS, the incumbent is responsible for the proper collection and depositing of monies received in the District Office for a wide variety of authorized land and resource uses such as grazing fees, use filing fees, map and copy fees, etc. Incumbent examines coding to ensure that deposits are made to the proper accounts.
    • Assists Collections Officer to reconcile accounts receivable monthly, transfer funds from one account to another, i.e., refunds, suspense, unearned, etc.
  • Miscellaneous Duties
    • Keeps informed of activities and schedules of the District Manager and Associate District Manager and maintains confidentiality of sensitive matters.
    • Serves as the facility contact for a wide range of meetings held in the Phoenix District office. Makes arrangements for reservations of meeting facilities and accommodations for a wide variety of meetings related to statewide functions.

The work is generally performed in an office setting. Work areas are adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Occasional work outdoors and in the warehouse is required. Occasional travel is required.



Education Requirement: This position encourages applicants to apply who are currently pursuing/received a degree in Recreation, Natural Resource Mgmt., or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Resumes must contain enough information to show that the applicant meets the experience as defined in the internship announcement. Applicants who have participated in ACE or similar organizations Youth Field Schools are highly encouraged to apply!


  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • Between the age of 18 and 35;
  • A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check;
  • Availability to work approximately forty hours per week
  • Ability to hike in rugged terrain for 8 hours a day, in variable weather conditions, in a remote location. Must be able to lift and carry 35+ lbs. for extended periods of time
  • Basic knowledge of local area.
  • Ability to safely drive a four-wheel drive vehicle on both improved and primitive roads
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with the public
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision
  • Comfortable speaking to individual/groups of visitors and providing information to them.
  • General computer skills; including use of Google based email, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals

The interns must be willing to represent ACE and the BLM in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.  Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
