Water Advocate

Job Description

The Utah Rivers Council is looking for a hard working professional to help us lead Utah onto a more sustainable water path through a mix of research, advocacy and relationship building.  We are seeking a fellow data geek with competent research skills, who is also willing to speak directly with decision makers and stakeholders to advance good water and watershed policy.

This position is part analyst and part advocate: we are looking for someone who understands how to tell a compelling story with data, but do it both on paper or face to face without losing sight of the big picture by understanding how the audience will react.  The ideal candidate is comfortable behind a computer but enthusiastic about speaking in a boardroom or to a city council to advance good water and watershed policy.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelors Degree and at least two years paid experience in a professional setting, preferably in a natural resource, water, or environmental setting or equivalent experience.  Preference will be given to applicants with a background in water, although this is not required.  Applicants with a background or understanding in either water policy, water management, water conservation, natural resource economics, government operations, or equivalent experience are urged to apply.

Good writing and speaking skills are a must, as are basic research skills to work independently and compile readily-available data to tell a story to a general audience.  Candidates should demonstrate in their application materials that they have a basic working knowledge of at least a few of the many environmental and natural resource challenges facing the American West including but not limited to climate change, water availability, habitat loss, energy policy, the global species extinction or some other area of expertise.  We encourage you to visit our website to ensure familiarity with our organization before applying.

Compensation, Benefits and Leave

This is a full time, salaried position with compensation dependent upon experience.  The Utah Rivers Council is a grassroots water advocacy organization that represents the entire economic and political spectrum in our work to implement a sustainable water future in Utah.  We strive to maintain a fun, informal work environment where progress and accomplishment are measured by real success and balance and time off are a regular part of work.

To apply send resume, cover letter, and a short writing sample to: Utah Rivers Council, 1055 East 2100 South, Suite 201, Salt Lake City, Utah 84106 or to
