USFS Information Services Assistant



American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the United States Forest Service Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Ogden Ranger District, is seeking an Informational Services Assistant. The member will dedicate 24 weeks with the Forest Service. The primary purpose of the position is providing front desk assistance and to disseminate information and interpretative assistance to the public through various means.

Location: Ogden, UT

The Ogden Ranger District is Located along the northern tip of the Wasatch Front mountains and the densely populated Ogden region and is frequented most often by day visitors. From May through September, the District is very busy, especially on the weekends. On Pineview Reservoir, visitors can indulge in water sports such as boating, swimming and fishing. Camping is also available at Pineview Reservoir and surrounding areas. Summer visitors can take a scenic drive, hike, bike, watch birds and wildlife, and ride their OHVs. Winter activities include snowmobiling, downhill and cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and ice-fishing.

The member should anticipate serving 40 hours/wk and will receive a living allowance of $450/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Will be provided by the agency at the daily rate.

Position Description:

The member will work to ensure, the information desk at the visitor center is covered at all times. The duties include; answering phones, greeting visitors and responding to inquiries regarding Forest Service activities and programs. The Visitor Services Assistant valuates inquiries in order to provide the most useful and appropriate information or to suggest other options, such as alternate routes or activities. They will provide guidance to the public on rules and regulations regarding on-unit activities, and attempts to gain public cooperation in protecting resources from damage and pollution. They will assist visitors and callers with informational searches. This position serves as a Collection Officer to sell item such as; maps and passes, in accordance with manual and handbook requirements. The participant is held responsible for submitting and accounting for collected monies using approved computer programs and records. The member will manage all incoming and outgoing mail on a daily basis.

Training Provided:

Onsite training as work is being performed. Training will include map and pass sales, radio usage and general office management.

Project Environment:

The work will be performed in an office setting. The applicant will be required to stand, walk, stoop, reach, occasional lifting and carrying of small packages and occasional light work on the District.


This position requires applicants to have a Bachelor's degree, or suitable transferable experience.


  • Performs regular daily activities for the reception area or visitor center, including but not limited to, daily opening and closing of the facility, and maintaining the front desk.
  • Provides visitors with effective instructions on security and safety procedures and informs the supervisor of visitor needs.
  • Operates a variety of audio/visual equipment.
  • Maintains a lost and found for visitors and staff.
  • Coordinates with staff specialists and public affairs office to provide the latest most accurate and appropriate information to the public.
  • Creates and posts informational handouts and flyers concerning safety, events and other items of importance.
  • Works with the public affairs unit to ensure that current and accurate information is available on the external Forest Service website.
  • Updates information such as road and recreation closures.
  • Responds to and directs web and email inquiries to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in clerical duties, such as mail and package delivery, personnel updates to phone lists and sign-out board.
  • Supports the office by performing such duties as monitoring of field going personnel for safety purposes, assistance with scheduling the conference room and other projects and duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Monitor Forest radio communications.


  • Members must be US citizen or possess a green card
  • Must be 18 years of age, or older.
  • Since this position requires driving, members must be 21+.
  • This position requires applicants to have a Bachelor's, and a Master's degree is preferred.

  • Availability to work forty hours per week in an office setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with the public.
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision.
  • General computer skills; including use of email, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • General clerical skills; greeting public, answering phones, computer use, filing and etc.
  • Cash handling experience.
  • Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record.
  • English proficiency required
