Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ridgecrest Field Office is seeking 2 Restoration Interns to dedicate at least 27 weeks each with land management as it relates to restoration and natural resource management within the BLM Ridgecrest Field Office jurisdictions. The Interns will assist with conservation, restoration, and other natural resource management projects on BLM-California public lands located in the Ridgecrest Field Office of the California Desert District. One intern will be designated as the Wilderness Restoration Intern and one intern will be the Non-Wilderness Restoration Intern. 

This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a background in in Natural Resource Management, Recreation, Forestry, or a closely related field, with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in the public sector outdoor recreation profession, as well as working in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the nation.

Start Date: Late August through September (Flexible for the right candidate)

Term Length: 27 weeks (with extension up to 1 year possible)

Location: Ridgecrest, CA. 

The BLM Ridgecrest Field Office has stewardship responsibility from the southern edge of Death Valley National Park, to the western edge of China Lake Naval Weapons Center, to sections of San Bernardino County in the south.  The field office oversees roughly 17 million acres of Public Land, with the highest and lowest points within the continental U.S. a short drive from the office.  The field office is located within Ridgecrest, CA.

Compensation:  $480/wk. Housing will not be provided. Interns can work with ACE and BLM staff to find affordable housing. 

Public Land Corps Special Hiring Authority: 
Interns serving under this agreement 
may be eligible for a special hiring authority upon completion of their internship. Qualifying interns who serve a "minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service on appropriate conservation projects as defined in the Public Lands Corps Act of 1993 and at least 120 hours were served on a project utilizing the Public Lands Corps legal authority." Eligible interns must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.

Position Description and Objectives: The ACE Restoration Interns will maintain a close interaction with the BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner and Wilderness Coordinator in developing the workload for the incoming restoration crews.

Most of the work performed by the Interns will consist of:

  1. Route Restoration in non-Wilderness or Wilderness areas
  2. Collecting seeds for Seeds of Success to be used in restoring routes
  3. Collecting data on survival of species used in restoration
  4. Collecting data for the new restoration crews coming in
  5. Monitoring effectiveness of restoration using GPS
  6. Identifying restoration techniques
  7. Conducting field work
  8. Maintaining the GIS database
  9. Organizing the outreach events and training
  10. Assisting with other resource related project, as assigned.

In addition, the interns will complete inventories, prioritize and coordinate work with staff, and initiate NEPA as needed.

This intern would act as staff liaison and coordinator for new project work developed as a result of inventories and need assessments made this year. Emphasis would be placed on preserving and enhancing recreational opportunities by curbing problems before they become unmanageable and subject possibly, to new restrictions or closures. The intern would be responsible for prioritizing, organizing, directing, and overseeing all work on the ground, coordinating with staff as well as restoration teams, on several large projects, involving use of hard vehicle barriers, boulders, assist in the boulder projects, as well as traditional restoration.

Work is performed in an outdoor environment that ranges from very cold and wet to very hot and dry. This work may require physical exertion over very steep, wet, muddy, slippery, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; and also may include bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar activities.

The Intern will be mentored by a professional resource specialist. Most work will be done under the close supervision of Outdoor Recreation Planner and Wilderness Coordinator but some of the work may be carried out independently with little supervision.  The intern will work mostly from specific instructions, with work reviewed for accuracy and completeness upon completion of assignments.



Education Requirement: This position requires applicants to have a degree in Natural Resource Management, Recreation Management, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience 'courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

  • Interns must be 21-35 years' old
    A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check is required
  • Interest and/or experience in Restoration and Wilderness Restoration, Natural Resource Management, etc.
  • Must have a high fitness level and a high comfort level in remote settings. Ability to hike in rugged terrain for 8 hours a day, if needed, in variable weather conditions.
  • Comfortable and confident in interacting with the public and participating in outreach events/public meetings
  • Experience with interpreting USGS topographic maps of various scales and using GPS units
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to apply GIS and related technology
  • General computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Experienced photographer (photo editing / Google Earth skills desirable)
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors and be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals


  • Personal reliable transportation is recommended (Intern is not required to drive personal vehicle for work projects). 
  • Experience in resources management and restoration, preferably in California, Great Basin and/or Mojave Desert
  • Practical knowledge of the general land use-planning process and land management programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with planners, resource specialists, managers, and peer professionals in Federal, State, and local agencies.
  • Familiar with NEPA process.
  • Plant identification (field work may require collection of threatened and endangered plant species).
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in ArcGIS and GPS use, specifically Trimble Juno or Geo Series units with ArcPad and/or TerraSync Software.
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome.
  • Strong writing, research, public speaking, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of California's public lands, cultural and historic resources, and natural environments is desired, especially the California Desert
