Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking two (2) interns to work directly with the Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) staff and assist with stabilizing the Historic Fire Cache, Bldg. 20 at park headquarters.

These opportunities are intended for enthusiastic individuals with background in construction who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of historic preservation.

Location Details Bldg. 20 is a historic building that once served as a structural fire station.  It is one of approximately 30 other buildings that make up the Lassen Headquarters Historic District.

Compensation:  ACE Intern is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of ~$545/week to cover the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.


Housing:  Lassen Volcanic National Park: ACE interns will be accommodated in park housing at NPS rent rate for the duration of the internship.  They could be housed at either the HQ housing area or the Manzanita Lake housing area.


AmeriCorps:  This position may be eligible for a 675-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($2255.24) upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required.



Formal 2-week Training at Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park: June 17 to 28
NPS and industry professionals will teach apprentices safety techniques, preservation philosophy, and technical trades skills.  During this instruction, TTAP apprentices complete core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. This training will be based at Lassen Volcanic National Park. Apprentices living outside commuting distance will be provided housing, travel, and per diem expenses coverage by ACE throughout the training period. For the remainder of the program, apprentices hone their skills alongside NPS craftspeople at their host parks.


Interns will stay afterwards for the balance of their 20-week commitment working on the stabilization of the historic fire cache. 



Position Description:  ACE Interns will be expected to be in good physical condition and able to stand for long periods of time, working from ladders, scaffolding and scissor-lifts.  A basic understanding of hand tools is required to remove and install building siding, modify wood members, paint and perform other accepted general building construction practices.  ACE Interns will work closely with journeymen carpenters in the complete restoration of the exterior building envelope of the historic Fire Cache.  Special projects include the re-construction of two staircases and minor foundation stabilization work.



Project Background and Objectives:  The Historic Fire Cache at park HQ has deteriorated to the point that major reconstruction must occur.  The building needs to be re-plumbed, and critical elements such as 12"x12" post and beam construction at the doorways needs to be re-built. All work to be performed to the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation.  



Qualifications:  Applicants for the position must hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as construction/historic preservation.


  • Desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications; this includes rigorous assessments both in classroom online coursework.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be 21-30 years of age 
    • (Interns must be 21 or older to secure ACE position that requires operation of NPS or ACE vehicles for duties and under 30 to secure PLC certification and meet Federal requirements)
    • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Ability to participate alone and in a group
  • Proficient in English
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check is required

  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights 
  • Ability and willingness to be trained in lead-based paint abatement
