Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management's Eastern States Office, is seeking one Natural Resource Intern for the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (ONA) in northern Palm Beach County, Florida, who will dedicate 21 weeks to assisting the ONA Manager with site management, and outreach and interpretive programs within the ONA and throughout surrounding communities. 

Working cooperatively with ONA partners, principally the Loxahatchee River Historical Society (LRHS) and Palm Beach County, the primary mission for the ONA is to protect, preserve and enhance unique and nationally significant historical, natural, cultural, scientific, and educational, recreation and scenic values. The site contains the historic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, and important historic and cultural resources from the past 8,000 years. Furthermore, the site is home to 26 special status species across 4 rare and sensitive Florida habitats. The ONA is a component of the National Conservation Lands, administered through the Bureau of Land Management.

Location: Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area, Florida.

The 120 acre ONA is in southeast Florida, in the northern portion of Palm Beach County and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Southeastern States Field Office in Jackson, Mississippi. The site is located at the confluence of the Indian River Lagoon and Loxahatchee River within the municipalities of the Town of Jupiter and the Village of Tequesta.  These cities make up the northern extend of an urban environment that stretches south to Miami providing all the amenities that can be expected from such urban environments. North of the site is a gap in Florida's urban coast, through the Johnathan Dickenson State Park and Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, before the urban setting continues north.

Compensation: ACE interns will receive a living allowance of $300/week for food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.  Housing is provided by BLM within the ONA.

AmeriCorps: This position is also eligible for an 675-hr AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment in AmeriCorps is required.

Position Description:  This ACE internship is focused on natural biological resources of the ONA. The intern will be responsible for monitoring species, maintaining habitats, compiling biological reports, assisting with planning and delivering outreach products highlighting the ONA biodiversity.  The intern may also be responsible for aiding the in development of project proposals to enhance habitats for key pollinator species and other species of concern such as the Monarch butterfly. In addition to this principal workload, the intern will be required to assist with other projects at the ONA ranging from maintenance to supporting outreach programs.  The Intern will be encouraged to develop their own outreach program highlighting the biological of site.

This position is ideal for a graduate with a specific interest in terrestrial ecosystems of south Florida along with knowledge survey and monitoring methods, and identification skills. A strong background in report writing is required.  The ideal candidate should be well-rounded, enthusiastic, adaptable, and resourceful with an interested in a career in public land management or scientific academia.

Project Background and Objectives: The BLM National Conservation Lands program endeavors to protect parcels of land with unique and nationally important resource values. The stated mission of the National Conservation Lands is "to conserve, protect, and restore nationally significant landscapes recognized for their outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values."  The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ONA was added to the National Conservation Lands program in 2008, when congress recognized the importance of protecting, preserving and enhancing a number of the sites values; most notably its historic, cultural and natural values.  The ONA is unique within the National Conservation Lands program as it is the only unit of the program east of the Mississippi, and one of only three ONA's nationwide.  As such, further to the sites own intrinsic value the site holds special importance for in bringing the BLM and National Conservation Lands to the attention of an east coast audience.

Training Provided: The intern will receive on-the-job training in field survey/monitoring technique, report writing, and other skills related to the position. ACE and the BLM are committed to providing the most educational, rewarding, and challenging experience possible to best prepare interns for future careers in the stewardship of America's public lands.

Qualifications: Applicants for the position will hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline.  The intern will be resourceful, adaptable, and able to work comfortably alone, within minimal supervision. The intern must be willing and able to represent ACE and the BLM in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not apply, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.

Required Skills:

  • Internship is available to US Citizens and permanent residents only.
  • Interns must be 18 to 35 years old.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in a writing.
  • Must have a strong work ethic, self-starter with the ability to work alone;
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently, as well as participate effectively in collaborative efforts.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation; personal vehicle is not required for the position, but strongly suggested.
  • Interns must have personal medical insurance for the duration of their participation with ACE.
  • Must be able to able and willing to work outdoors, in hot humid weather conditions, participating in physical labor; be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • English proficiency is imperative. Other language proficient is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, research, and organizational skills.
  • Interest and experience in nature photography.
  • Ability to swim, snorkel, kayak and/or paddleboard.
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome

This position will likely have recurring (regular, scheduled or anticipated) access to vulnerable populations.  State and Federal Criminal History Checks will be required for participation.
