Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Arizona Strip District Office is seeking ONE Lands and Minerals Intern to assist the BLM's Arizona Strip District Office. The Interns primary responsibility is to assist with the maintenance of records and databases for the BLM Arizona Strip District Lands and Realty Program and the Minerals Program.

The BLM Arizona Strip District Office manages approximately three million acres in northwestern Arizona, which includes the Vermilion Cliffs and the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monuments. The district office oversees eight wilderness areas, including the internationally known Paria Canyon and Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, the Old Spanish National Historic Trail, thirteen Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, and two river segments suitable for Wild & Scenic River designation. The Grand Canyon isolates the Arizona Strip from the rest of Arizona, making it among the most remote and rugged public land in the lower 48 states. There are approximately 8,000 miles of unpaved roads leading to spectacular scenic vistas, remoteness and solitude among rough scenic canyons and ponderosa pine forests. This distinctive part of Arizona has a special appeal to many people.

St. George lies within the transition zone between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range physiographic provinces. It is a desert climate and summertime temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees. The city is bounded by red Jurassic sandstone bluffs and black Quaternary lava flows.

Compensation: $600/wk. Housing will not be provided. Housing may be available for interns at Dixie State University, as well as short term rentals in the St. George area. A personal vehicle is highly recommended, although there is public transportation in St. George.

PLC Competitive Hiring Authority: This position is authorized by the Public Land Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 and expanded by the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013. Interns who meet basic requirements during their term of service may be eligible to receive their Noncompetitive Hiring Eligibility Certificate to be used when applying to future federal

jobs. Requirements are: (1) Intern must be between the ages of 18 to 30 and (2) Intern must complete at least 640 hours on a federally approved PLC Project. More information can be provided upon request.

Position Description:

The participant will primarily be working with records and databases in an interdisciplinary office setting. The participant will also perform field inventory and inspections asneeded. The objective is to maintain integrity of current hardcopy casefile records and digital tabular databases while also integrating this data into GIS databases. Records and databases are used for processing and managing BLM land use authorizations, an important and interesting component of multiple-use public land management.

The participant will write reports that document the features inspected in the field. The reports will describe any structures, equipment or debris found and workings associated with lands and minerals authorizations. The reports will describe conditions on-the-ground and any reclamation that has been completed or that needs to be completed. The participant will incorporate photographs to document conditions on-site and will include GIS maps with field data collected during the inspections.

There will be substantive BLM programmatic involvement by BLM professionals that will work daily side by side with the participant. Provide the participant with equipment and hands-on training to complete data collection and document conditions on-the-ground to enhance public safety and prevent undue and unnecessary degradation to public lands. The participant will be involved in monitoring active mining operations in coordination with other agencies.

The participant will learn basic techniques for mineral exploration and the lands and realty department, including the principles of reclamation. For the participant's professional growth, we will also include in depth information on active mining operations, land use authorizations and involvement in various land management functions.

The participant will be required to set up an account in DOI Learn to complete IT Security Awareness, Defensive Driving and UTV training. The participant will have the ability to complete other DOI Learn training to enhance their knowledge in areas related to BLM's lands and minerals programs. The participant will have access to current BLM geospatial program documentation and training resources. The participant will have the ability to complete ESRI web based training courses to enhance their GIS skills. The participant will have the opportunity to attend BLM Webinars, which offer additional training specific to their job and can open up avenues for networking.

Leadership Development:

The applicant will work with an interdisciplinary team of professionals that includes, geologists, physical scientists, archaeologists, realty, range, recreation and law enforcement specialists who have unique leadership skills within their discipline. Working with Bureau of Land Management employees the participant will be exposed to government regulatory standards, the enforcement of which requires strong leadership abilities. By participating in this work environment, the applicant will learn and develop these abilities. The applicant will have the ability to plan and execute work programs independently.

Presentations could include the local geology on school field trips, the geology of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument on Public Lands Day and presentations at the Field Office's popular Brown Bag Lecture series, which provides unique opportunities for members of the public to learn more about the area's natural resources and public lands.

Approximately 75% of the work will be in the office and 25% in the field. The dress code in the office is mostly casual with a well-groomed appearance. Field attire reflects the task at hand and camping may be required.

The Arizona Strip District is very remote and borders with the Grand Canyon National Park to the south. There are few paved roads except for in towns and highways. Many of the roads have a natural or gravel surface and 4x4 off road driving experience is necessary; ATV/UTV experience is useful. Government vehicles are equipped with 2-way radios for communication and field activities are tracked by GPS. The applicant will need to take a government defensive driving course to operate BLM vehicles. Applicants must have a valid driver's license and a good, safe driving record. A personal vehicle is not required; however, St. George is located within driving distance of seven National Parks and Monuments, numerous wilderness areas, renowned mountain bike trails, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities.


This position encourages applicants to apply who are currently pursuing/received a degree in land use, natural resource mgmt., or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.   • US Citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • Between the age of 21 and 35;
  • A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check;
  • Availability to work approximately forty hours per week;
  • Ability to hike in rugged terrain for 8 hours a day, in variable weather conditions, in remote locations;
  • Ability to safely drive a four-wheel drive vehicle on both improved and primitive roads;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with the public;
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision;
  • Comfortable speaking to individual/groups of visitors and providing information to them;
  • General computer skills; including use of email, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. Data management proficiency is essential; (Data formats the participant will be required to use include hardcopy forms, digital forms, digital tabular databases(accessed through both local software and internet-based systems) and digital geospatial databases);
  • Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, ArcCatalog, ArcMap, etc.) and a working knowledge of navigating GIS data in ArcCatalog and managing ArcMap map document content. Experience with basic feature geometry and attribute editing methods using ESRI geodatabases is required;


  • Applicants must have good organizational skills and will be accountable for working with original documentation and other BLM official records;
  • Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts;
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals.


  • Coursework in geography, geology, and/or engineering;
  • Basic experience reading and interpreting legal descriptions and master title plats;
  • Advanced GIS feature editing skills preferred, or will be required to be obtained through on the job training and exercises;
  • Eagerness to learn collection, management, and utilizing data;
  • Experience with environmental monitoring.
