Summary: The Directorate Fellows Program (DFP) is a Direct Hire Authority Program that includes an 11-week Fellowship project for current students at the rising senior undergraduate or graduate school level.  Upon successful completion of the Fellowship program, along with degree conferral, participants may be directly appointed without competition to full time, permanent positions.

Project Description: Do you have a passion to connect people with nature? Are you interested in ensuring that all segments of society have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and our shared natural heritage? Are you an excellent communicator with a desire to make positive change? If you answered yes to these questions you should consider applying for this opportunity at the Huron Wetland Management District located in Huron, South Dakota. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes that in order to stay relevant in an ever changing society, it is vital to connect people with nature in tangible and meaningful ways.

The goal of this project is to gain a thorough appreciation, awareness, and understanding of the ethnic makeup of community members who live within the City of Huron, SD in order to effectively provide outdoor experiences that meet the interests, wants, and needs of a diverse community.

This will be accomplished by interviewing stakeholders and minority members of the community throughout a rigorous 11-week internship. Findings from this study will be used to re-imagine outreach strategies that better serve all segments of the community. Upon completion of the project the intern will incorporate findings from interviews to develop one educational product OR coordinate one activity/event OR complete a conservation stewardship project of their choosing.

The intern will also complete an end of project portfolio that will be used by field and regional office staff to design a re-imagined outreach strategy for the Huron Wetland Management District. The success of the project will be heavily dependent on the interns ability to effectively communicate and understand the interests and needs of the diverse community.


Minimum Education Level and Desired Degree Areas: All degree levels will be considered beginning with rising seniors up to Masters and PhD level graduate students

Working Conditions/Requirements: Valid driver's license (needed to drive a Gov't vehicle) Other: Spanish fluency not required but highly beneficial.
