Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking 2 Members to contribute to a variety of historic preservation projects alongside Bandelier preservation and maintenance staff.

These opportunities are intended for enthusiastic individuals who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of historic preservation. No background or previous experience in construction or historic preservation required. Training and tools for all activities will be provided by park staff professionals.

This project is in conjunction with the Indian Youth Service Corps Program:

In 2021, the TTAP program enacted the first Indian Youth Service Corps (IYSC) partnerships. The program connects Indigenous youth with an exciting hands-on experience in the preservation and maintenance of historic resources, specifically resources of cultural importance to Indigenous peoples at National Park sites.

Location: Bandelier National Monument (BAND), Los Alamos, NM

Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back over 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

Bandelier National Monument and its surrounding region holds intact, one of the largest density of culturally significant resources to those of Modern Day Pueblos. Most notably San Ildefonso and Cochiti Pueblos whose proximity and use of this region closely connects them to this ancestral home. The Valles Caldera National Preserve(VCNP) and Manhattan Project Museum which are located within 30 minute drives from Bandelier National Monument also provide for unique perspectives.

Cellular service in Frijoles Canyon is via Verizon LTE only. Other carriers may work in other areas of the monument, but no service is guaranteed.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $599/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: There may be potential for provided housing, if needed, depending on availability.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 675-hour AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,417.14 upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment and volunteer service is required.

Scheduling: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Position Description: TTAP members will work on a variety of different projects over the course of the term, including but not limited to, masonry, carpentry, graffiti mitigation, stabilization of archeological sites and historic structures, including an ancient 400-room pueblo. Members may also work on more recent historic structures, including many front-country buildings built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Participants will work alongside National Park Service Staff who are experts in various fields. Participants will also be a part of a full cultural immersion touching specifically on the interest of the selected participant. This program also includes visits to museums and other institutions that reflect the culture and history of the region and hold various world renowned collections relevant to Bandelier National Monument and the surrounding region.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.

Preferred Skills:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as construction trades, use of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of one or more trade practices, such as masonry, carpentry, roofing, mechanics, and/or painting.
  • Familiarity with construction and craftsmanship.
  • Basic familiarity with common factors in deterioration of buildings and structures.
  • Ability and willingness to use and care for common hand tools and portable or stationary power tools associated with the trade (e.g., hammers, saws, drills, planers, etc.)
  • Deep interest in preserving history.
  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation.
  • Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights.
  • Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty.
  • Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day.
  • Have the ability to think critically and creatively.
