ACE: Wilderness Study Area & Off-Highway Vehicle Restoration Members - Eagle Lake Field Office

The American Conservation Experience, a nationwide Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ and Salt Lake City, Utah in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Eagle Lake Field Office is seeking Two (2) Wilderness Study Area (WSA) and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Restoration Members to dedicate a 26-week term to assist the Eagle Lake Field Office (ELFO) with restoration work within WSA and OHV areas.

Location: Susanville, CA / Eagle Lake Field Office

Public lands managed by the Eagle Lake Field Office cover approximately one million acres in northeastern California and northwestern Nevada. The area offers an amazing diversity including forests, peaceful lake shorelines, scenic river canyons and expansive high deserts. These areas provide myriad recreational opportunities, and other uses including timber harvesting and livestock grazing that help meet the food and fiber needs of our nation.

Living Allowance: The member will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the cost of housing, food, and incidental expenses.

Housing: Housing is NOT provided by the BLM. Members will be responsible for securing their own housing during the term.

Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-competitive Hiring Authority: Members serving on this project may be eligible to receive a Department of the Interior (DOI) PLC non-competitive hiring authority certificate upon completion of their term of service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours (16 weeks at 40 hours/week) and utilize their certificate when applying for qualifying federal positions within 2 years of receipt. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility.

Position Description: The BLM Eagle Lake Field Office is seeking two (2) members with interest in Wilderness Study Area (WSA) and Off-highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation and restoration management. The members will assist the Outdoor Recreation Planner with the WSA and OHV program, which covers almost 1.2 million acres of high desert terrain. This position will be focused on inventory and monitoring of restoration sites and includes assistance with public outreach programs and interpretation of restoration sites for cultural and natural resources.

Office/lab duties will largely consist of limited data entry, report writing, mapping and photo management, and assistance with the creation of educational materials such as interpretive panels. Fieldwork includes monitoring the success of restoration sites, signing, restoration and public outreach initiatives. Fieldwork will be conducted largely in the interior of the rugged and remote Skedaddle and Tunnison WSA's and Fort Sage OHV areas. Methods consist of hiking pre-determines restoration target areas to restore and apply appropriate signage. Provided opportunities to enhance career skills in writing, detail, and communication, as well as field skills including the finding and documenting of sites, use of GPS equipment and creating maps in ArcGIS, field note methods and record of restoration techniques and photo documentation.

Work schedule can be flexible if need be. Primary 4/10 schedule (Wednesday - Saturday) from 7 - 5:30pm.
