Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management is seeking Administration and Outreach - Direct Hire Authority Interns interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of BLM. This internship opportunity is intended to provide individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds professional experience and exposure to public service and lands management.

A Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) internship is perhaps the most effective tool currently available to agencies seeking to expedite the hiring of qualified students in positions quickly. It is a competitive and rigorous project based internship that sets the foundation toward finding a full time position directly with a government agency. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ACE EPIC are looking to engage the next generation of conservation stewards from diverse and unique viewpoints with particular attention to African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic students. The program will raise awareness of our public lands, their accessibility, and the need for community involvement in their preservation.

**Please note: This opportunity is only available to current students at the end of the program. Unfortunately any students graduation before August 2023 do not qualify and cannot be considered.

Start Date: June 2023

End Date: August (11 weeks after start date)

Compensation: $700-$800/wk. Compensation is dependent on education level (Undergraduate/Graduate).

Relocation Reimbursement: We can reimburse up to $1000 of costs associated with moving to and from the internship location.

Housing Assistance: Housing assistance up to $175 per week is available upon request and demonstration of need.

Tucson, AZ (In-Person)

The applicant will be working with the BLM to set the public engagement and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) foundation for the San Pedro Watershed Vegetation Management Environmental Assessment (EA). This DHA internship would include identifying stakeholders, identifying communication methods, and supporting the BLM with initial public scoping meetings.

Lake Havasu City, AZ (In-Person)

The BLM Colorado River District Consists of three field offices: Kingman, Lake Havasu and Yuma. The District is in need of having several safety plans updated for the district and safety information updated at all three field office locaitons.

Lakewood, CO (Remote)

The division of Support Services is working to better understand BLM Colorado's business portfolio with a focus on the overall operating budget and workforce. The project will focus on performing analysis of available data to better understand and identify trends, to include increases and decreases of funding and staffing levels, as well as to visualize the data. This project will also be focused on creating new tools and better utilizing existing tools to perform the preferred analysis and visualization. One of the other goals and expected outcomes is to set up automated workflow processing to more easily update the products developed in the future.

Lakewood, CO (In-Person)

Joint venture between the divisions of Support Services and Communications to work on recruitment and diversity efforts in BLM CO. The goal is to create recruitment videos highlighting the great work that each of our offices do around the state of Colorado (i.e., field, district, and state offices). We are focusing on individual communities and performing outreach to increase the interest in positions with BLM and in the civil service.

Salt Lake City, UT (Remote)

As part of the BLM continuing effort to prevent the decline of amphibian and reptile species, the BLM and Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) is developing Conservation Action Plans (CAPs) for at-risk herpet.

Falls Church, VA (Remote)

The BLM Eastern States (ES) current sharepoint site (intraweb) is being updated to meet the needs of the organization andstaff. The goal of this project is to provide leadership and capacity to the ES Subject Matter Experts (staff and managers) to design and build an up-to-date, effective, and pro-active internal communication and coordination site. Other public affairs duties may be assigned. This project will build on specific work expanding and focusing on key Support Services programs and customer needs. Our goal is to have this portion of the ES internal communications pages updated and functional by year end to be best able to communicate with and support customer needs.

Falls Church, VA (Remote)

BLM Eastern States is seeking increased capacity to help grow the awareness of the BLM and its public lands in the East. The BLM Eastern States office is seeking the help of a digitally-savvy public affairs intern who can support the BLM's mission, spotlight hidden public land gems in the East, and support the state's effort to creatively tell the BLM's story in an engaging way. This will involve the intern, in coordination with the BLM Eastern States communication team, to learn about digital strategy, update web pages, write engaging content, coordinate meetings, and complete research. At the end of the project, the BLM Eastern States website should be refreshed and updated with accurate information and engaging content that will help the BLM increase awareness of BLM's eastern footprint, encourage engagement and interaction, builds positive sentiment and understanding, and helps bring public lands values to diverse audiences.

Falls church, VA (Remote)

BLM Eastern States is seeking increased capacity to help grow the awareness of the BLM and its public lands in the East. We are seeking an intern who will be dedicated to developing creative content that brings attention to the BLM's mission, spotlights hidden public land gems in the East, and support the state's effort to creatively tell the BLM's story in an engaging way. The intern would contribute to BLM's mission by helping to build and sustain a strong social media presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. At the end of the project, the intern will have created various forms of current and evergreen content (eg. video, photos, draft posts), and a social media campaign to be implemented in FY23. The content will be engaging and informative and designed to help increase awareness of BLM's eastern footprint, encourage engagement and interaction, builds positive sentiment and understanding, and helps bring public lands values to diverse audiences.

Milwauki, WI (In-Person)

The BLM Northeastern States District is undertaking planning for oil and gas leasing in southeastern Ohio on federal minerals underlying the Wayne National Forest. The court ordered project is expected to be controversial and public communications will be a key component of the project. The BLM and Forest Service will conduct public outreach and meetings to receive comments on the draft environmental analysis expected in summer 2023. This project will involve a lot of coordination within the BLM and Forest Service, as well as with affected publics including environmental organizations, the oil and gas industry, and local governments. This project will offer an excellent opportunity to help communicate the BLM's multiple use management mission.

Casper, WY (In-Person)

The Casper Field Office is in need of an Environmental Protection Specialist intern to complete part of the backlogged final abandonment (FAN) inspections. The FAN inspections would occur on plugged wells located within the Casper Field Office. Intern will be expected to enter inspections and any enforcement actions into databases. The work consists of studying and monitoring a variety of surface management situations of progressive difficulty that involve related steps, processes, and methods. Each situation would require an individual solution depending on their location, environmental considerations, proposed use, available data and consideration of alternatives of action.

Flowood, MS (In-Person)

The Southeastern States District Office hosts approximately 11 Wild Horse and Burro Adoption/Sales event each year within an 11-state jurisdiction. These adoption/sales events are critical to the overall success of the BLM's Wild Horse and Burro program as approximately 15% of an wild horses and burros are adopted in our jurisdiction. The District is in need of an updated marketing strategy to help market/advertise Wild Horse and Burro events. A fresh set of eyes and skills will help to create a successful strategy that can be utilized for each upcoming event by the communications staff. The strategy should identify potential target markets for high profile areas of interest, have suggestions on where/how to advertise (radio/TV/newspaper/social media), when to advertise (how far in advance to be useful), and new marketing tools such as educational videos targeted for social media distribution. The intern will have the opportunity to attend several WHB events, interact/interview staff, volunteers and members of the public to gather necessary information to draft a comprehensive new strategy.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must be a Currently Enrolled Student. Recent graduates are not eligible for DHA positions. I.e. if you are graduating this year, before August 2023, you unfortunately do not qualify
  • At least 18 years of Age.
  • A valid driver's license, Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles).
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal history check
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
