Sitka, Alaska is a town of 8,000 located on Baranof Island. There is an airport and ferry terminal, and many amenities of a small city, including many restaurants, a movie theater, unique craft shops, and a handful of museums and nature centers. The temperate rainforest and coastal islands that surround Sitka also have plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, and mountaineering.

Position Overview: The Member in the Alaska Interpretive Intensive will participate in Audience Centered Experience (also acronymed as ACE) based seasonal Interpretive training, develop and deliver original interpretive programs, participate in a multi-day training covering web and app authoring and interpretive writing and take the National Park Service's Audience Centered Experience Train-the-Trainer course. Members will work in the full breadth of a park interpretive program for the duration of the Intensive.

This position will work as part of the Sitka National Historical Park's interpretive team. At Sitka National Historical Park our rangers have the opportunity to connect visitors with two very different cultures while surrounded by the Southeast Alaska temperate rainforest.

This position will present formal interpretive programs at the Visitor Center and at the Russian Bishop's House. Programs presented will share Alaskan Native cultures, Russian American history, the natural wonders of the temperate rainforest and Pacific Coast. This position will also help staff visitor information positions at the Russian Bishop's House and Visitor Center for informal visitor contacts, and present pop-up tables to visitors. This position will also have the opportunity to help develop the NPS App walking tour/virtual tour of the Russian Bishop's House which will have new exhibits installed this year.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promote exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups at the park.

Schedule: This position is currently scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8am until 5pm Alaska Standard Time, with a one-hour lunch. Work schedule may change based upon unforeseen challenges, but the intern will have at least a week of advance warning if their schedule needs to change.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing is provided by the National Park Service. Park housing is a bedroom in a shared dormitory style building.

Project Travel: ACE members will have access to up to $6000 to be used for eligible relocation expenses and project travel. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training will also include Sitka National Historical Park's annual training, which will be the entirety of the member's first two weeks at the park. This training will provide a thorough look at the park and provide the Member with the tools needed to succeed in their position.

Qualifications

Required:

• Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required byU.S. government contracts
• Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
• Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
• A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
• Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

• Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as history education or outdoor education.
• Knowledge of Native American cultures and American history
• Ability and willingness to speak to the public about historical topics, cultural topics, and natural resource topics
• Deep interest in exploring untold or lesser-known stories and sharing those stories with others

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking distances up to two miles, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.

• Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
• Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 20 lbs., ability to move up to 30 pounds.
• Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
• Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
• Travel: This position does not require unique travel.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the National Park Service or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
