Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE Archaeology Member to contribute to archaeological monitoring and analysis alongside Bryce Canyon National Park.

Location: Bryce Canyon National Park - Bryce, UT

Bryce Canyon National Park is home to a variety of natural and cultural resources. The limestone breaks which give rise to the famous hoodoo formations that attract millions of visitors each year also provide habitat for unique plant and animal species today as in the past. Those species also provided for human development in the Bryce Canyon area. Today the park has a rich diversity of both the prehistoric Native American and Euro-American histories.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $920/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.


Housing: The ACE Member will be accommodated in provided housing at no cost for the duration of the term.


Position Description

Primary Duties:

  • Participate in archaeological field surveys of the project areas by walking over the landscape and searching for archaeological features and artifacts
  • Record data and prepare survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.)
  • Provide leadership to field crews by assigning tasks and monitoring the status of those assignments
  • Serve as field lead for survey activities
  • Participate in artifact recovery and provenience determination
  • Work closely with Interpretive staff to integrate the cultural resource information into interpretive programs
  • Assist park staff to produce core documents under Archaeology and History 110 cultural resources inventory documentation for Bryce Canyon National Park. Core baseline documents include a final report on the 110-inventory survey, CRIS-AR data entry, NRHP determinations of eligibility on new and unevaluated sites, and updated NRHP determinations of eligibility on all known/previously recorded sites within the National Park. A final report, field forms, maps, and photos will be generated by this project and will be cataloged and curated at Zion National Park.
  • All data produced from this project will be used to update CRIS-AR, park, and regional GIS (park atlas), and will be actively used to manage the sites and aid in future monitoring efforts.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed / work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as archaeology, cultural resources, public history, anthropology, etc.
  • Knowledge of archeological surveys, fieldwork, and artifact analysis
  • Ability and willingness to be a part of a cultural resources team
  • Deep interest in helping protect America's National Parks
