Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SAMO) is seeking ONE Archaeology Member to contribute to archaeology projects alongside NPS Staff.

Hidden in plain sight from Los Angeles and only 45 minutes away, the Santa Monica Mountains offer easy access to surprisingly wild places. Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: ACE member will be accommodated in dormitory style park housing that is available at no cost for the duration of the term.

ACE member will need to use their own vehicle for transportation to and from NPS headquarters building, which is a distance of roughly 16 miles from dormitory.

Scheduling: ACE Member will generally work ~40 hours/week and will have the option of working 8-hour days, five days per week OR 9-hour days with every other Friday off. For either schedule, work will begin at 8 am. The ACE Member will follow the authorized schedule of NPS staff, which consists of a 30-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks throughout the day.

Position Description:

The ACE member will receive professional field experience and exposure to the archaeological/cultural resource program at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA). For the duration of the internship, they will be joining professional National Park Service (NPS) archaeologists in conducting fieldwork at various prehistoric (Chumash, Tongva, and Tatavium) and historic archaeological resource locations throughout the park to meet the park's needs.

The ACE Member will be splitting time between conducting archaeological surveys in the field and compiling data to draft archaeological site records and reports in the office at the NPS headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA. Additionally, the intern will have some opportunities to conduct preliminary historical research to supplement the archeological information. Work in the office is somewhat sedentary, while fieldwork is more physically demanding. Archaeological survey usually involves hiking with a backpack through scenic areas of the park that sometimes include hilly and rugged terrain.

Major duties will include:

• Participating in pedestrian archaeological survey, formal site recording of various cultural resource sites within the park
• Identifying and classifying artifacts in the field and during post-fieldwork lab analysis
• Photographing and documenting cultural resources
• Assessing fire damage and monitoring post-fire impacts at cultural resource sites within the park
• Collecting spatial data at archaeological sites using Tablet and/or iPad integrated with Collector software
• Mapping and plotting archaeological sites using the Geographical Information System (GIS)
• Researching specific sites, structures, objects, or people related to the Santa Monica Mountains to help interpret archaeological findings
• Editing historical and/or archaeological reports for the park

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.

Qualifications:

Required

• Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
• Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
• Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
• A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
• A personal vehicle for driving to and from NPS Headquarters
• Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.

Preferred Skills:

• Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree in anthropology and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as archaeology, history, or related fields.
• Deep interest in pursuing a career in archaeology or cultural resources
• Knowledge of GIS mapping and familiarity with its basic features.
• Ability and willingness to hike/survey in sometimes challenging terrain.
