The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ACE EPIC are looking to engage the next generation of conservation stewards from diverse and unique viewpoints with particular attention to African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic students. The program will raise awareness of our public lands, their accessibility, and the need for community involvement in their preservation.

However, if you are unable to meet that deadly, We strongly encourage you still apply and please reach out to Josh Haussler at jhaussler@usaconservation.org. We will continue rolling reviews of applications until all positions are filled.

Positions and Locations: (These locations / descriptions may have changed, so please double check the descriptions posted in our application portal listed below)

Kingman, AZ

The BLM Kingman Field Office has several historic ranch houses and homesteads. The intern would visit each site and conduct research to develop interpretive materials that would be available to the public through a kiosk display and pamphlet materials.

Yuma, AZ

The BLM Yuma Field Office has several historic cabins and homesteads. The intern would visit each site and conduct research to develop interpretive materials that would be available to the public through a kiosk display and pamphlet materials.

Whitehorn, CA

The project involves assisting the BLM-AFO Archaeologist with the final stages of updating archaeological site forms for sites located along the coastline of the King Range NCA. These sites are vulnerable to effects of climate change, such as storm event wave surges and high amounts of precipitation, but also to the effects of tectonic uplift. The intern will put together a packet that will be used in consultation with the CA Office of Historic Preservation (SHPO) to obtain formal concurrence of eligibility (the intern will take part in the consultation). The intern will then coordinate with the BLM-AFO Archaeologist on a research approach, and then conduct research (involving interviews, site visits, literature reviews, etc.) on the various ways that agencies and institutions are responding to climate change in order to manage and protect cultural heritage sites. The intern will then present these findings to the BLM-AFO management team and the culturally-affiliated Tribe.

Craig, CO

The LSFO Archaeological Intern will work on two critical projects. First, they will assist the permanent and seasonal LSFO archaeologists in conducting intensive pedestrian surveys of livestock concentration areas and monitoring archaeological and historic sites ahead of approving grazing allotment permits and permit renewals. This work would also include compiling preliminary analysis of data obtained during inventories and incorporating findings into various management reports in a logical manner for review and use by permanent cultural staff. Second, the intern will produce GIS digital deliverables for backlogged reports. The intern will be tasked with compiling and/or creating GIS shapefiles following a standardized set of procedures, while volunteer and permanent staff complete the written reports. Once reports and digital deliverables have been finalized, the intern will build and compress the project folders with all required elements for submittal to SHPO. This is a rigorous project that will require a candidate who is capable of paying careful attention to detail and managing their time well.

Montrose, CO

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Uncompahgre Field Office (UFO) with other field offices in Colorado is developing a predictive model to prioritize survey within the thousands of miles that comprise our transportation networks. Currently, more survey and identification of cultural resources in high probability areas are needed. Once complete, the model can inform line officers' prioritization of future cultural resource inventories to inform travel management planning efforts. Through GIS work and Class III pedestrian inventory, the intern would use ArcMap (or ArcPro) to create polygons around high and medium probability areas for future survey.

Winnemucca, NV

The Winnemucca District Hazardous Fuels, Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ESR), and Vegetation Management Program is in need of two archaeologists to assist with completing cultural resource inventories, site monitoring and recording, and the preparation of site records and inventory reports in support of the implementation of treatments for a Fuels Reduction Project and a Invasive Treatments Project.

Hines, OR

Recently the BLM Burns District in Hines, Oregon remodeled it's office. During the construction phase the collections and records were placed in temporary storage. A new storage facility is being constructed and both the artifacts and records will need to be consolidated and moved to this permanent location. The new collections space will be organized to best meet the office's cultural resource objectives and project work as well as accessible for research. The records also need to be digitized in a standard format and entered into a searchable database modernizing current capabilities. This is a very worthwhile project giving hands-on experience with a significant collection of Great Basin artifacts and records. Archaeologists are also open to some field opportunities to broaden the overall experience. There will be clear expectations and available supervision to achieve a successful and rewarding experience for the intern and an important accomplishment for the preservation of Cultural Resources.
