Location: Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Cherokee, North Carolina

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is unique among America's National Parks; located on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is renowned for its rich diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of the ancient mountains and forests, and its preservation of the Southern Appalachian mountain culture.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $600/week to cover the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.


Housing: Housing will not be provided by ACE or NPS, however reimbursable housing support of $5,405 will be available to the individual. This support will be administered as $1,081/month for 5 months.

Cell phone reception is not always reliable and a personal vehicle is required, due to the remoteness of the site and no reliable public transportation. The ACE Member will have use of a government vehicle for project-related travel.


AmeriCorps: The 23-week position may be eligible for a 900-hour ($3,247.50) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment steps are required.


Position Description:

The Assistant Trails Volunteer Coordinator will work to increase overall number of volunteer participants, number of volunteer opportunities, as well heighten the level of project complexity within the program.

This project will expand the capabilities of the current Trails and Facilities Volunteer Program by providing consistent field partner to the Volunteer Coordinator as well as aid in the creation and implementation of up-to-date recruitment tools. The Assistant will focus on increasing community involvement and outreach in communities closest to the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Duties may include:

  • Leading and/or co-leading regularly scheduled volunteer, maintenance workdays on park trails or grounds.
  • Assisting with orientation training for volunteers and assisting with planning and oversight of volunteer recognition events or processes.
  • Constructing native timber structures to alleviate trail erosion and deterioration.
  • Resurfacing large sections of low-lying trail tread with compacted crushed aggregate.
  • Constructing timber posts and rail fencing around roadside pull-offs.
  • Assisting the GRSM Trails program in hazard tree mitigation.
  • Attending in-person outreach events within surrounding communities.
  • Creating and implementing electronic outreach tools for use on social media and email recruitment and marketing.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
  • Must be able to obtain basic Sawyer level certification within the NPS Chainsaw Safety Program
  • Ability to drive crew cab trucks and passenger vans.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, as well as in an office setting.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within the NPS
