Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking One Boundaries Technicians to serve with guidance from NPS staff to inventory and assess boundary and cattle fencing in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

Location: Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Parks

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $900/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. A Travel Reimbursement of $750 is available for the member.


Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS.


Position Description:

The ACE Members will assist NPS staff in performing inventory and assessment of park boundary fences and gates. Members will be responsible for reporting inventory results to park management to direct maintenance staff in fence enhancement and repairs. Occasionally, Members may be responsible for locating trespass cattle within the park and coordinating with NPS staff in contacting BLM grazing managers and ranchers to assist in their removal. Members may also be asked to make minor repairs to remote sections of fence.

After training, Members will often serve independently and must be able to drive a government vehicle to work sites. Members may also assist staff in other resource management activities, including vegetation management, springs monitoring, and other related tasks.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.


Physical Demands: Moderate to high physical effort is required. Some duties require standing, squatting and kneeling for extended periods of time. Some duties also require strenuous physical activity such as climbing, lifting, carrying, and hiking long distances (10-12 miles per day) in rugged, precipitous, and sometimes unstable terrain, in extreme heat or cold temperatures, sometimes with biting insects and in the vicinity of snakes and scorpions.

The majority of time will be spent in the field working outdoors in desert, shrubland and riparian environments characterized by exposure to extreme heat, sometimes over 100 degrees in summer months, and cold in the winter months, plus the discomfort and hazards of manual work and working with heavy tools and fence materials. Necessary safety equipment will be provided.

Camping with other interns/staff for up to 5-day trips into the remote backcountry (without access to motorized vehicles, stock support or cell phone service) may be required.


Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 31.


Qualifications:

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
