American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and through the Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program, is seeking an Archeological Resources Member to assist in all aspects of Minute Man National Historical Park's "Civil Rights Initiative: Reanalyzing an 18th Century Free Black House Site through a 21st Century Lens" project.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students and recent graduates, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. CRDIP participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional development webinars as well as write blogs or create videos about their projects throughout their term. This position is classified as a DHA (Direct Hire Authority) Internship. DHA positions target exceptional, current upper-level undergraduate or graduate students that are interested in pursuing careers with the NPS. DHA positions will be rigorous internships that develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities.

DHA applicants will be involved in cultural resource management projects that generate data and/or research that must be analyzed and presented to various stakeholders at the end of the internship. After successful completion of the internship, and graduation from their degree program, the intern will receive DHA non-competitive hiring eligibility.

Location: Minute Man National Historical Park- Concord, MA

Located in the Greater Boston area, Minute Man National Historical Park preserves structures, landscapes, museum collections, and artifacts associated with the opening battles of the American Revolution, which occurred April 19th, 1775. The park also preserves resources related to America's literary tradition and agricultural heritage.

Position Overview: The Archeological Resources Member will be part of the project team for "Civil Rights Initiative: Reanalyzing an 18th Century Free Black House Site through a 21st Century Lens." The Team will include museum curators, archivists, visitor services staff, and cultural resource managers. The ACE member will assist in all aspects of the project to ensure proper care, interpretation, and management of the archeological collection as well as preserve the significance of the associated site. They will contribute to the team effort, while also conducting independent research and writing to share analysis and interpretation of significance of the objects and site with a broader audience. Duties will include:

  • Assisting with research and analysis of archeological objects
  • Collaborating with interpretive and resource management divisions regarding site significance and interpreting history to the public
  • Researching and writing narratives of archeological objects' significance and relevance to the African American experience in the time leading up to, during, and after the Revolutionary War
  • Presenting project findings to the public, field professionals, and other stakeholders
  • Drafting social media posts
  • Contribute to the project's final written report with photographs, narratives, and recommendations for reinterpretation of the collection and site

Schedule: Full-time position Monday to Friday; 8:30am-5:00pm.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $680/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility, or view general information online here.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS. A reimbursement not to exceed $1,400/month for three months will be provided to help offset the cost of housing.

Travel Allowance: ACE members will have access to up to $800 to be used for eligible travel expenses like trips into Boston and/or commuting.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include park orientation training, handling museum collection protocols and archeological record protocols.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Education, experience, and/or demonstrated interest in archeology, museum studies, public history, cultural resource management, or a related discipline
  • Independent research and writing experience
  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation
