ACE EPIC NPS MA: Cultural Landscape Preservation CRDIP Fellowship

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation is seeking ONE Cultural Landscape Preservation Fellow interested in dedicating 20 weeks in support of National Park Service.  This is an opportunity provides the prospective Fellow an opportunity to be embedded as part of the Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) team documenting historic and cultural landscapes throughout the National Park Service Northeast Region.

Start Date: Summer 2018, ASAP

End Date: 20 weeks from start date

Duration: A 20-week minimum commitment is required

Location: Boston, MA

Compensation:A contribution of ~40 hours per week will be expected and the ACE Fellow will receive a stipend of $714/week, paid out every two weeks.  Housing is not provided.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program(CRDIP)is a special professional development internship offering that supports undergraduate and graduate students, from underrepresented populations, who wish to gain exposure to and experience in the historic preservation/cultural resources fields of work. Applicants must be 18-35 and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program. 

Position Description: The Resource Assistant Fellow will be a part of the Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) team documenting historic and cultural landscapes throughout the National Park Service - Northeast Region.  During the course of the 22-week Fellowship, the Resource Assistant will take the lead in completing a Cultural Landscape Inventory for a single park landscape (specific site to be determined according to candidate's expression of interest or preference).  Deliverables will include:

• A detailed narrative and graphic landscape history and existing conditions documentation incorporating mapping and photography of individual cultural landscape features and characteristics.
• Independent work will be guided by precedent examples and experienced staff will be on-site and accessible in order to respond to questions and provide direction as necessary.
• Experienced staff will tailor training sessions in computer drafting software, geographic information systems, and graphic design software toward developing existing skills or learning new skills according to an assessment of the candidate's strengths and weaknesses. 
• Completion of the 22-week project may involve travel to the landscape sites, travel to repositories and archives relevant to landscape research, and field work involving the use of measurement tools and photography. 
• The candidate will be required to synthesize research findings into an accessible narrative account describing the evolution of the landscape over time, and an economical description of the present-day landscape and its component features. 
• The Fellowship experience will conclude with an oral presentation accompanied by graphics assembled into a slide show format, highlighting accomplishments and deliverables produced during the course of the 11-week experience.

The Cultural Landscapes Inventory (CLI) is a peer-evaluated inventory of historically significant landscapes throughout the national park system.  Requiring review and concurrence by state historic preservation officers (SHPO), landscapes documented through the CLI program meet National Register of Historic Places criteria and include historic sites, historic designed landscapes, and historic vernacular landscapes.  These landscapes include the Northeast Region's Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields, and historic homes and domestic grounds of Presidents and artists, and historically managed portions of landscapes that are part of large parks such as Shenandoah National Park and Cape Cod National Seashore that are otherwise managed in support of natural resource values.  The Cultural Landscape Inventory program prepares and distributes landscape documentation in a consistent format to foster effective collaboration across specialties at the local, regional, and service-wide level; serving as a rigorous analytical tool for judging resource management accomplishments and resource accountability. 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills and experience through their resume and application and be in pursuit of, have a 4-year degree, or have graduated within the previous 2 years with a degree in urban planning, cultural resource management, landscape architecture, or relevant field. 

Required:

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
• Must be 18 to 35 years of age and are in pursuit of a higher education degree or within two years of graduation date.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS and with diverse audiences.
• Ability to self-direct alone and effectively participate in a group or small team environments.
• Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation.
• English proficiency is necessary.
• Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required.

Preferred:

• Skills in and enthusiasm for reading, writing, and research;
• Deep interest and academic training in landscape architecture, horticulture, history, and/or historic preservation;
• Ability to deeply focus on one task clearly and take responsibility for written expression of research findings;
• Experience or interest in improving skills with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, GIS, and computer aided design and drafting software;
