ACE EPIC NPS CA: Lassen Volcanic CRDIP Cultural Resource Management Internship - AmeriCorps

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking ONE Lassen Volcanic CRDIP Cultural Resource Management Intern interested in dedicating 26 weeks (with the possibility of another 26-week extension*) in support of the National Park Service at Lassen Volcanic National Park in Mineral, California. This position will assist the park's Historical architect fulfilling responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act to document and assess impacts on historic resources.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a special professional development internship offering that supports undergraduate and graduate students, from underrepresented populations, who wish to gain exposure to and experience in the historic preservation/cultural resources fields of work. Applicants must be 18-35 and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program.

Compensation: The ACE CRDIP Intern will receive $400/week paid out every two weeks.  Each intern will also receive a one-time $640 travel stipend to offset the cost of relocation.

 

Housing: Park housing is provided at no cost to the intern.

 

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 900-hour ($2,907.50) AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of internship service hours. Additional enrollment is required.

 

Project Background: The selected candidate will serve in the cultural resource management division at Lassen Volcanic National Park. This position will assist the park's Historical architect fulfilling responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act to document and assess impacts on historic resources.

Based on the intern's interests and abilities, duties may include the following areas of specialization and associated tasks:

Historic Preservation: Conduct research and develop treatment plans for Historic Structure Reports, update Cultural Landscapes Inventories, and assist with condition assessments of historic structures.

Collections Management: Research applicable codes for museum spaces and assess park museum and collection facilities for security and fire protection, processing, analyzing, and cataloging archival materials, and preparing artifacts and archives for storage.

History: Prepare historic context reports on themes associated with the development of Lassen Volcanic National Park, conduct research and write narratives for National Register Determinations of Eligibilities (DOEs).

 

Position Description: The intern will serve with and assist the Lassen Volcanic NP historical architect in completing Historic Structure Reports, National Register nominations, and other documents. Projects will focus on research, field data collection, and preparation of baseline documentation. Duties may include researching the history of historic properties, documenting the existing condition of structures with photographs and/or annotated drawings, and developing treatment recommendations and alternatives in accordance with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

 

Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as ecology, interpretation, education, natural resources management, environmental science, or related disciplines.

Required:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be in pursuit of a higher education degree or within two years of graduation.
  • Must be 18 to 35 years of age (Interns must be 21-35 to apply for any ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties.)
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS.
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences;
  • Ability to self-direct alone and effectively participate in a group or small team environments.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation.
  • English proficiency is necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required.

Preferred:

  • Graduate students studying or having recently completed degrees in historic architecture, historic preservation, landscape architecture, museum studies, or history.
  • Knowledge of cultural landscapes, landscape architecture, historic architecture, or museum collection management.
  • Knowledge of National Register criteria, and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes.
  • Strong research and writing skills.

The CRDIP Intern must be willing and able to represent ACE and the NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
