CRDIP Historical Research Assistant- Natchez National Historical Park

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Historical Research Assistant interested in dedicating 11 weeks to support Natchez National Historical Park in gathering and organizing materials of the little known Forks of the Road enslavement market in Natchez, MS.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program. CRDIP participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional development webinars as well as write blogs or create videos about their projects throughout the summer.

Location: The park protects the sites and structures associated with the peoples of Natchez and its surrounding area from earliest inhabitants to the modern era. The name Natchez is derived from the "Natchez" American Indians who inhabited the area at the time of European exploration. The historic sites maintained by the park, and the surrounding preservation district, give visitors an opportunity to understand the region's social, political, and economic development, particularly in the pre-and-post Civil War era's. They also provide insights into the region's commercial and agricultural history, especially in relation to the Mississippi River, slavery, and cotton.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $480/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing will be provided at no cost.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,342.86) upon successful completion of service hours.

Position Description: ​​The Historical Research Assistant will primarily assist in gathering and organizing materials from the 20+ year personal research collection of Seshsh Ab Heter-CM Boxley into a form that can be used by park staff and public researchers. Ser Boxley, a Natchez native, returned home after a career as a community organizer in Oakland, California, and took up the preservation and interpretation of the little known Forks of the Road enslavement market as his personal passion - he has created a number of exhibits and publications. He was recently honored at the NPS Underground Railroad Network to Freedom award ceremony. Boxley's most recent passion is the US Colored Troops in this area; he has organized a decade of living history programming. A public monument to the USCT is currently underway by a grassroots task force.

The final products from this project will be:

  • An organized and sorted collection of research and archival materials that relate to a variety of subjects associated with the Forks of the Road site.
  • A finding aid that facilitates public access to these materials.
  • Scans of selected portions of the collection that can be made available via the park website and shared with other public research institutions such as the Natchez Adams Public Library, the Historic Natchez Foundation, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
  • Other opportunities relating to public history - assisting with development of tours, programming, and exhibits at park sites.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Competitive applicants will hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in History, Public History, American History, Archives, Liberal Arts or other related fields.
  • Passion for telling diverse stories, attention to detail, and assembling puzzles
  • Interest in the Civil Rights Movement
  • Personal vehicle
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
