CRDIP Media and Interpretive Intern Zion National Park

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Zion National Park is seeking ONE Media and Interpretive Intern interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service.  The Media and Interpretive Intern will primarily be responsible for creating web content to best represent the museum collections. The intern will be involved in a variety of aspects of the museum program including: inventorying collections, housing upgrades, preparing and maintaining exhibits, housekeeping and Integrated Pest Management duties.

Location: Zion National Park, Utah

The Park is located in Southern Utah and provides stunning views of red rock buttes, canyons, and landscapes. The Zion National Park museum manages collections for Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park. There may be project related travel to Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce Canyon is about an hour and a half drive from Zion.

Compensation: 400/week, $640 relocation bonus

AmeriCorps: Interns in this position may be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award Program (EAP). The EAP opportunity is for a successful term of service with an award to the Corps member upon completing 300 hours of service.

Housing: Park housing is available. The Intern will stay at the dorm with a shared kitchen and bathroom facility. The dorm is within a walk's distance to work.

Position Description: The Zion National Park museum curator manages Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park museum collections. Under the direction of the museum curator, the Intern will research the parks' collections, write collection summaries for the web sites, and choose and photograph representations from each collection. The Intern will also photograph key objects, reformat data in the cataloging database, and post prepared content for the National Park Service Museum Collections Web Exhibit. The Intern will be involved in a variety of aspects of the museum program including: inventorying collections, housing upgrades, preparing and maintaining exhibits, housekeeping and Integrated Pest Management duties.

Learning goals: 

• The Intern will become proficient in museum and National Park Service standards and procedures.
• The Intern will become familiar with the Department of Interior cataloging database, Interior Cataloging Management System (ICMS).
• The Intern will learn how to conduct research using museum collections and the park database. They will receive training in museum collections management, Integrated Pest Management, environmental monitoring, and artifact handling and historical documentation.
• Opportunities for additional training and education related to park resources will be provided as they arise (researcher lectures on site, special projects, field assignments, etc.)

Mentoring: The Intern will be closely supervised and mentored by the museum curator. The Intern will receive general park orientation with incoming seasonal interpreters. The museum curator will support the career growth of the Intern offering training and expertise in museum standards and National Park Service standards. The Intern will be provided to work on a wide range of museum duties 10% of the internship. There are also cross-training opportunities in historic architecture, archeology, historic landscapes, interpretation, or natural resources.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess good organizational and analytical skills, and attention to detail. Strong written and oral communications skills are also important. Ideally, applicants will have interests in one or more fields of study related to the museum's holdings (history, natural resources, anthropology, environmental studies, etc.) and/or interest in conservation, information management or museum studies.

Required: 

• Internship is available to US Citizens and Green Card holders only.
• Intern must be between the age of 18 and 35
• A valid driver's license and a clean driving record, (documentation to be provided upon request).
• Zion National Park is a remote location and a vehicle is recommended for personal use for grocery shopping and weekend excursions.
• Deep interest in history, natural resources, anthropology, environmental studies, conservation or closely related topic
• Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check.
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong interest in pursuing a career within the museum field.
