CRDIP Museum Services Assistant- Redwood National Park

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) Museum Services Assistant interested in dedicating 11 weeks to support Redwood National Park with curation of archeological collections from ancestral Tolowa, Yurok, or other local tribal land.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students and recent graduates, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. CRDIP participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional development webinars as well as write blogs or create videos about their projects throughout their term. A DHA (Direct Hire Authority) Internship targets current, upper-level undergraduate or graduate students that are interested in pursuing careers with the NPS. DHA positions will be rigorous internships that develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities. DHA applicants will be involved in cultural resource management projects that generate data and/or research that must be analyzed and presented to various stakeholders at the end of the internship. After successful completion of the internship, and graduation from their degree program, the intern will receive DHA non-competitive hiring eligibility.

Location: Most people know Redwood as home to the tallest trees on Earth. But the Parks also protect vast prairies, oak woodlands, wild rivers, and 40 miles of rugged coastline. People have lived in this verdant landscape since time immemorial.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $585/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing may be provided at no cost. There is NO cell service or WiFi at park housing. If park housing is not available, a monthly reimbursement will be offered to help offset the cost of housing.

Position Description: ​​Redwood National Park's (REDW) museum collection facility currently houses several archeological collections from ancestral Tolowa, Yurok and other local tribal land that is now contained within the park. REDW has a close and evolving relationship with the local tribes regarding the management of their ancestral territory, archeological sites and collections stemming from these sites. This project would serve to strengthen those ties, provide much-needed curatorial work on these collections, and infuse traditional knowledge into the museum cataloging process. The ACE member will be supervised by the Curator of Redwood National Park and will learn and perform most of the duties of a museum technician for the National Park Service through researching, cataloging, and rehousing ancestral Tolowa collections following very structured Department of the Interior and National Park Service guidelines. This will include researching and visiting sites, if accessible, and using this knowledge to accurately identify artifacts within each site, catalog each artifact into the National Park Services mandated collections database, and rehousing each object by learning and practicing methods for effectively storing and housing museum collections. Additionally, the ACE member will have to work closely within the organization of Redwood National Park to fully understand each collection, including interacting with the Curator, archeologists, and the Program Manager of Resource Management and Science, as well as other staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary education program
  • Interest or background in archeology, museums or history
  • Experience with historical or archeological research
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience with databases or Excel
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
