CRDIP Untold Histories Research Assistant- Acadia National Park

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking an Untold Histories Member interested in dedicating 16 weeks to support Acadia National Park in promoting, preserving, and creating opportunities for visitors to experience the untold history of marginalized communities' participation in park history.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program. CRDIP participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional development webinars as well as write blogs or create videos about their projects throughout the summer.

Location: Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline of the United States, an abundance of habitats, and a rich cultural heritage. At 3.5 million visits a year, it's one of the top 10 most-visited national parks in the United States. Visitors enjoy 27 miles of scenic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of historic carriage roads.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $480/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing is available at $500/month, this amount will be fully reimbursed.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,678.57) upon successful completion of service hours.

Position Description: ​​This position is located at Acadia National Park in the Division of Visitor Experiences and Education. The primary purpose of this position is to engage with, document, and interpret the historical and contemporary resources of the park that are under-represented or untold but necessary in the telling of a more complete and inclusive Acadia story. The project will conduct a survey of the park's history to uncover the gaps in truly understanding this history and the diversity of stories that contribute to what is interpreted by the park. The ACE member will work as part of a team to promote, preserve, and create opportunities for visitors to experience the untold or unknown history of marginalized communities' participation in park history, including the stories of women, Native Americans, and people of color. Innovative engagements with staff and visitors will highlight the significant contributions of marginalized communities to the history and culture of Acadia National Park with potential to consider the broader experience of marginalized communities' role and context in conservation work in the National Park Service.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Background in History, Anthropology, Political Science, African American Studies or other related field
  • Ability to write for a variety of different audiences
  • Experience with research, digital content development, and social media
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
