Cultural Resources Assistant- George Washington Memorial Parkway

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Cultural Resources Assistant interested in dedicating 11 weeks to support George Washington Memorial Parkway in a number of Cultural Resource Management program activities.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program. CRDIP participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional development webinars as well as write blogs or create videos about their projects throughout the summer.

Location: The George Washington Memorial Parkway was designed for recreational driving. It links sites that commemorate important episodes in American history and preserve habitat for local wildlife. The parkway and its associated trails provide a scenic place to play and rest in the busy Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $440/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is not provided by ACE or NPS and is the responsibility of the ACE member. A housing reimbursement of about $460/month will be offered to help offset the cost of housing.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,342.86) upon successful completion of service hours.

Position Description: ​​The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) Cultural Resources Assistant for Summer 2022 would likely be a hybrid position of virtual and in-person opportunities as dictated by COVID 19 health and safety protocols and staff availability. The ACE member will engage in a number of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) program area activities in addition to having an opportunity to work on a specifically defined project or projects, as this will provide the broadest experience in the wide range of activities like conducting historical research, working with CRM files, editing/creating Archeological Investigations Project Information Forms, augmenting reference links on CRM Reading Lists, helping to develop a stronger web presence for the GWMP CRM Program, examining landscape plans to identify missing elements for restoration, etc. Possible in-person activities include assisting with archeological investigations, helping with resource condition surveys, working with archival and library records and materials, helping with the curation of museum collections, performing architectural conservation work on historic structures/memorials, and assisting with cultural landscape management tasks.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Interest in the field of cultural resources
  • Experience conducting historical research
  • Basic computer skills
  • Able and willing to work outdoors, in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by the time they start their term or request a medical or religious exemption
