Position Description: This project will focus on the Fort Pulaski National Monument management records collection, and will be conducted at Fort Frederica National Monument, St. Simons, GA, where the collection is housed. Since Hurricane Matthew flooded park collections storage, Fort Pulaski has shared a facility with Fort Frederica.

In 2014-15, Fort Pulaski resource management records were surveyed and processed by regional museum and archives staff using the "More Product, Less Process" method. This approach to archival arrangement allows for a large volume of material to be preserved, arranged, and described in a relatively short amount of time, but does not address specific conservation needs at the item level. The archives team recommended further processing of oversized materials, including maps, drawings, and plans.

The ACE Member will assist in scanning oversize documents, recording associated metadata, and rehousing the material appropriately. Additionally, the ACE Member will assist with routine environmental monitoring and research requests that pertain to the Fort Pulaski National Monument collection.

The ACE Member will be required to work primarily in collection storage:

  • Scanning oversized material from Fort Pulaski resource management records
    • Completing associated metadata
  • Rehousing scanned oversized material
    • Flattening rolled material
    • Storing in appropriate storage
    • Updating locations in museum database and finding aids

Since processing was completed in 2015, internal requests for use of the collection have increased dramatically. Facilities and Resource Management staff use these materials when planning for and executing projects to maintain and rehabilitate historic structures.

Digitization would allow park staff to use architectural drawings and plans to inform resource management activities without damaging fragile paper documents, and would provide easy access without the need for hours of travel. Because the collection is already processed, the park does not anticipate issues with metadata collection that sometimes accompany digitization projects. The park has already successfully digitized other portions of the Resource Management Collection, including photographs and audio-visual materials, and plans to follow similar procedures for metadata collection and digital preservation.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.
