Environmental Education and Video Production Member - Chattahoochee National Recreation Area

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking ONE Environmental Education and Video Production Member to contribute to virtual environmental education programing and distance learning programing (synchronous and asynchronous) alongside Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area staff. This could involve a focus on field (forests, wetlands, along streams, and in and along the Chattahoochee River) and in-studio technical support and video production. The ACE member would develop virtual environmental education and interpretive programs under the direction of park staff and support and assist with programs presented to the general public.

Location: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Atlanta, GA.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is "an ancient river in a modern city," and offers many opportunities to get outdoors, including hiking, rafting, and fishing. Atlanta is Georgia's largest city and capital and can boast itself as a thriving business and entertainment center with an eclectic mix of residents back dropped by a city with southern roots.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $250/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.


Housing: The ACE Member will be accommodated in dormitory-style housing at no cost for the duration of the term.


AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 900-hour AmeriCorps Education Award of ($3,172.50) upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment steps are required.


Position Description: The purpose of this position is to provide a fulfilling experience for the member, whereby they gain a greater knowledge of the park and its resources and learns of various employment opportunities within the NPS and conservation careers. The ACE Member will increase the park's ability to reach a greater audience through virtual live and on demand videos of curriculum based education and of general interpretive programming. The ACE Member will need to be knowledgeable of Teams, WebEx, and Zoom programing as well as have a good working knowledge of video production with iPhone, iPad, laptops, and other equipment such as a gimbal, lavalier microphone system, and lighting equipment. Preferably, the Member should possess editing skills and, if possible, the ability to produce accessible video products.

As a result of this experience, the Member would have gained additional virtual program skills, knowledge of environmental education/interpretation best practices, public speaking skills, and opportunities to connect Atlanta's urban and underserved youth to a national park and the first National Water Trail. The Member will also be provided opportunities for networking with professionals from a variety of agencies and organizations involved with environmental education, natural areas stewardship, and video production. The position both promotes understanding and awareness of fragile park resources as well as promoting environmental education through distance learning and video production activities within a national park setting.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop environmental education/interpretive virtual programs (a minimum of 3 lessons), under the direction of park staff.
  • Provide technical support for video and live virtual programs in the outdoors (in forests, wetlands, along streams, and in and along the Chattahoochee River) and in a studio.
  • Participate in creating and leading interpretive programs to the community at large.
  • Assist the site's social media team.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups. The ACE member will be required to complete training on interpretation, Leave No Trace, and education facilitation techniques about park resources. The park will provide safety training, interpretation, ethics, first aid, CPR, education, program production, and social media and marketing support.


Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
  • Must have a personal vehicle for personal travel
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Must be able to swim

  • Knowledge of video production, preferably with iPhone, iPad, laptops, and other equipment such as a gimbal, lavalier microphone system, and lighting equipment

Preferred Skills:

  • Competitive applicants for the position may hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or experience in some aspect of natural resource study with a strong background in the use of video and virtual learning equipment. This could include subject areas such as botany, ecology, biology, wildlife, natural resources, environmental science, outdoor education, or related disciplines. Applicants with a degree or background in video production or distance learning will be considered as competitive.
  • Experience working with video and virtual learning equipment and programs.
