Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management is seeking GIS - Direct Hire Authority Interns interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of BLM. This internship opportunity is intended to provide individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds professional experience and exposure to public service and lands management.

A Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) internship is perhaps the most effective tool currently available to agencies seeking to expedite the hiring of qualified students in positions quickly. It is a competitive and rigorous project based internship that sets the foundation toward finding a full time position directly with a government agency. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ACE EPIC are looking to engage the next generation of conservation stewards from diverse and unique viewpoints with particular attention to African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic students. The program will raise awareness of our public lands, their accessibility, and the need for community involvement in their preservation.

**Please note: This opportunity is only available to current students at the end of the program. Unfortunately any students graduation before August 2023 do not qualify and cannot be considered.

Start Date: June 2023

End Date: August (11 weeks after start date)

Compensation: $700-$800/wk. Compensation is dependent on education level (Undergraduate/Graduate).

Relocation Reimbursement: We can reimburse up to $1000 of costs associated with moving to and from the internship location.

Housing Assistance: Housing assistance up to $175 per week is available upon request and demonstration of need.

Carlsbad, NM (In-Person) - habitat suitability

The applicant will be working on a reassessment of the suitability of habitat building blocks for the Lesser Prairie Chicken. Our goal is to survey (windshield surveys, aerial imagery, GIS data review, etc), the region within the Carlsbad Field Office Boundary and update the existing GIS layers with changes identified since the last update roughly 15 years ago. The intern would be responsible for working with the Natural Resource Specialists, Wildlife Management specialists or Range Specialists, to create the updated buffer areas and develop a process to help automate the process for future updates.

Carlsbad, NM (In-Person) - Cave/Karsst program

The intern will assist the Cave/Karst Program by updating GIS karst survey data and creating a sustainable workflow for inputting new karst locations into the GIS database. The Carlsbad Field Office deals with many industry projects in high karst occurrence areas which require karst surveys. These surveys frequently identify new karst features, including caves that must be added to our database of karst locations. The third-party karst surveyors submit their data in a variety of formats. The intern would standardize how the third parties deliver data and create a sustainable workflow for inputting new karst locations into an existing layer. The intern would also clean up a backlog of data, including redundant data points. In addition, the intern will be able to spend time in the field with the Cave Specialist, learning how to identify different karst features and can field check surveys as needed.

Carlsbad, NM (In-Person) - Rights of way

Adjudicating and processing applications for Rights-of-Way and Right of Way Surety Bonds. Reviewing Applications for Rights-of-Way, Assignments, Amendments, special lease requests, and other required reports from customers to ensure all legal requirements have been timely submitted and are complete/correct. Serving as an authority and technical expert in realty (lands) adjudication functions and requirements located in the Field Office. Researching and interpreting regulations, policies, orders, decisions, and manuals to determine their effect on public land use. Advising customers on the status of their applications and assisting them with corrections of deficiencies. Preparing and sending official correspondence. Preparing and presenting special reports, briefings, issue papers and narratives. Performing and overseeing case file abstracting, data entry into and retrieval from automated systems. Executing formal legal decisions on Right of Way applications. Uploading Realty projects in ARC/GIS.

Rock Springs, WY (In-Person)

Intern candidate will assist the Cadastral land surveyor in all phases of survey projects: specifically the resurvey of the Wyoming-Utah state line and or the Sweeney Ranch double corner investigation and resurvey. As a trainee the intern will be required to function as assistant to the land surveyor after an intensive daily training program. Candidate will be required to operate survey equipment, manage data, conduct record research, and represent the bureau when encountering members of the public in the field.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must be a Currently Enrolled Student. Recent graduates are not eligible for DHA positions. I.e. if you are graduating this year, before August 2023, you unfortunately do not qualify
  • At least 18 years of Age.
  • A valid driver's license, Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles).
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal history check
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
