Heritage Education Fellowship

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Heritage Education Fellow interested in dedicating 60 weeks to support the National Park Service's Cultural Resources Office of Interpretation and Education (CROIE) in producing heritage education products to connect students, families, educators and travelers with historic sites that embody under-represented stories of national history.

Duration: 60 weeks

Living Allowance: The ACE Fellow is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $1,160/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, disbursed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is not provided by ACE or NPS and is the responsibility of the ACE member. A reimbursement of $700/month will be offered to help offset the cost of housing.

Position Description: The National Park Service Cultural Resources Office of Interpretation and Education (CROIE) offers tools for educators of all levels and students of all ages to teach and learn about history, historic preservation, and American heritage and culture. The Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) program as well as the Discover Our Shared Heritage travel itinerary series have been recently been refreshed with new formats and new lesson plans. The CROIE office also administers national internship and fellowship programs such as the Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) and the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE) Internship Program in cooperation with partner organizations.

The ACE Fellow will perform a range of tasks that connect students, families, educators and travelers with historic sites. The Fellow will manage, maintain, and update TwHP and the Heritage travel sites and will contribute to Telling All Americans' Stories and associated sites such as the Women's History site. The Fellow will collect and perform research to produce heritage education products for TwHP, Discover Our Shared Heritage, and associated historical content to tell all Americans' stories. The Fellow will create digital content to share information broadly, such as shared content on nps.gov and potentially other products. Subject emphasis is on under-represented stories of national history and elucidating the national history that gives local sites their national relevance. The Fellow will learn behind the scenes processes and tools that enable experiential learning for youth and will assist program staff in supporting meaningful experiences. The Fellow will create highlights that showcase NPS intern and program successes on various platforms. This will involve connecting with program youth participants (interns) and host sites to build content. The Fellow may also convene program participants virtually for various activities.

The Heritage Education Fellow will be an essential member of the team and will communicate with relevant partners, scholars, interns, and others in a collaborative atmosphere. They will have the opportunity to interact with NPS staff members in a variety of NPS cultural resource programs. The Fellow will work largely in a remote capacity, but will have the option of working in the office as conditions permit.


Qualifications:

Required

  • Education and interest or experience in one or more cultural resource fields including history, archeology, cultural anthropology, museum studies, historic preservation, or related field
  • Skills in writing for a variety of audiences, editing, research (primary, secondary, visual sources), expressing scholarship in accessible language
  • Basic computer and digital skills
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by the time they start their term or request a medical or religious exemption

Preferred

  • Skills in content management systems for online content
  • Background or education in formal or informal education
