Summary

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Grand Teton National Park is seeking ONE Park Operations and Administrative member as part of the 2024 National Park Service Academy cohort. During this 16 week position and additional one week March Experience, the members will develop resource interpretation, public speaking, and customer service skills while simultaneously learning about the National Park Service (NPS) as a career path.

About NPS Academy: National Park Service Academy aims to support the development of a more representative NPS workforce by connecting dynamic, young adults through an experiential program designed around three themes - Connections, Diversity, Legacy. Through participation, members build their conservation ethic, intercultural awareness, and career readiness skills and competencies. NPS Academy introduces participants to the NPS Universal Competencies that are foundational to all NPS career paths within a cohort of like minded peers.


Program Goals:

The main goals of NPS Academy are:

  • Connect a diverse group of young adults sharing a passion and curiosity for careers within the NPS
  • Deepen participants' knowledge of and personal network within the NPS by fostering an NPS mentorship relationships
  • Develop a network of emerging conservation and park leaders by building ambassadorship, storytelling, and leadership skills

Location:

The main duty station is located in the south district of Grand Teton National Park, Moose, Wyoming. The intern will spend most of their time performing tasks in and around the Moose Headquarters building. Opportunities will be provided to explore other areas of the park - both NPS operational areas and the park's stunning backcountry. Grand Teton is a world class destination for hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, paddling, fishing, cycling, wildlife viewing and photography.

Position Description:

The mission of the National Park Service is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Serving in an administrative role will cultivate a "big picture" view of Grand Teton operations and public lands management on a national level. Gaining this perspective will prepare the intern to make a difference in the conservation field. In their day-to-day work, the intern will primarily assist "behind the scenes" staff (employees, volunteers, and other interns) that make the park run. They can expect to help with a variety of administrative tasks such scheduling, payroll, travel, housing, and warehouse operations, as well as offering a fresh perspective while problem solving issues. The intern will have more flexibility in guiding their development than most permanent staff, who have relatively fixed responsibilities.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.


Position Benefits

Living Allowance: Members are expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $600/week (less any applicable taxes) to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. NPS Academy allowances are designed to prepare members for similar allowance structure at entry level positions at their service site and some variation exists due to local cost of living differences.

Relocation Allowance: ACE members will have access to up to $1000 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Housing: NPS Academy members will be accommodated in provided park service housing at no cost for the duration of the term. Housing will likely be in a shared unit with other seasonal employees. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended for commuting in the park and surrounding areas.

Scheduling: These members will work a 5/4/9 schedule, with a traditional two-day weekend one week, and a three-day weekend the other during each pay period. Weekends will be Saturday/Sunday with the option to have every other Friday or Monday off.

Loan Forbearance: AmeriCorps members may also be eligible for federal loan forbearance. Additional enrollment steps are required.

Qualifying Child Care Coverage: AmeriCorps members may also be eligible for qualifying child care coverage. Additional enrollment steps are required.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects are subject to specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. If you do not meet the eligibility requirements for the PLC, you are still eligible to apply for the NPS Academy position with ACE. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility.

Preferred skills and experience:

An important reminder: all skills needed for this position will be trained on the job; a good attitude, curiosity for learning and plants, and a willingness to positively contribute to the team are the only skill prerequisites to finding success.

Essential skills and experience: attention to detail, time management, ability to manage multiple tasks and timelines simultaneously, respect surrounding sensitive information.

Additional skills and experience that are helpful: knowledge of MS Office, typing skills.

Skills and experience that members will gain from this position: strong oral and written communication skills, park operations and regulations.

ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.


ACE Requirements:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required three-part criminal history check.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Optional: Ability to hike over rough terrain, and camp overnight under field conditions.

Vision Requirements: Requires ability to focus. Accommodations are available as needed.

Environmental: Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled. Outdoor working conditions are a possibility.

Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.

Travel: This position does not require unique travel.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
