National Historic Trails Fellowship

Summary American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking a National Historic Trails Fellow to work directly with the National Trails Office (NTIR) and assist primarily with the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail (TRTE). The project will entail developing materials to orient and introduce digital visitors to trail sites and points of interest along the Trail of Tears NHT through the creation of web-based media, NPS app content, and introductory videos that contain information about traveling the trail and different ways to experience it, taking into consideration the many meanings of the trail, and sharing its relevance to a variety of audiences, from both a Cherokee and youth perspective. Location: National Trails Office (NTIR) - This position is fully remote with some travel opportunities to the National Trails Office in Santa Fe, NM and other trail specific site visits. Position Overview: The Fellow will focus on creating content for the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail website and the NPS App. The Fellow will be provided a template for the required information for populating "Places Assets" and will be required to research and communicate with site contacts to gather and review the necessary information for the form fields. Examples will be provided. The Fellow will assist NTIR Interpretation staff in creating short orientation videos for TRTE sites to accompany Places Assets. The Fellow will also be encourage to identify additional trail related project(s) that meets their own interests or area of study. The Fellow will benefit from exposure to the complexities of partnership work within the National Park Service and across 24 states, and opportunities to develop communication and collaboration skills that can be used to further career goals. The Fellow will also be provided opportunity to research NPS career opportunities and be mentored in developing a federal resume.

Schedule: Expected to contribute 80 hours within a two-week pay period. General hours will be Monday through Friday, but weekend or holiday work may be expected for travel and events. Standard office hours are 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Mountain Time, but some flexibility is permitted. Travel days may be longer than eight hours.


Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $715/week to help offset the costs of food, housing, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the fellow and not provided by ACE or NPS.

Travel Allowance: Reimbursements not to exceed $4,166.17 will be provided for project-related travel, training, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts.
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Applicants with knowledge of Trail of Tears related history, and experience in visiting trail sites and points of interest. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed the Remember the Removal Ride due to their relevant knowledge and experience with trail resources
  • Applicants holding or pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or possessing relevant experience in subject areas such as communications, public affairs, interpretation, recreation, or history
  • Knowledge of U.S. history, principles of youth engagement outside of formal classrooms, principles of relevancy and inclusion, grammar, sentence structure, and style guides for composing professional documents
  • Ability and willingness to:
    • Travel across ~24 states and work in mixed climates
    • Work with partners who are passionate but may possess varying abilities and technological skills
    • Find or create solutions to unique dilemmas
    • Be flexible and accommodating with partners and NTIR staff
    • Communicate with a wide range of people who may require or prefer different communication styles and mediums
  • Deep interest in working collaboratively in teams and partnerships while making historical events relevant to today's national dialogues
