Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE Natural Resource Member to assist part-time with biological monitoring projects alongside John Muir National Historic Site staff.

Location: John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CA

ACE EP duties may also be at neighboring National Park Service units of Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front National Historical Park and Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site.

The John Muir National Historic Site, located in the East San Francisco Bay Area, preserves the home of John Muir one of America's most famous naturalists and conservationist as well as over 325 acres of native oak woodlands, grasslands and other natural lands once owned and maintained by the Muir family, including Mount Wanda.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~20 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $300/week to offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.


Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the NPS.


Position Description:

In support of the National Park Service's mission, the fundamental work conducted by the Natural Resource Member will include: maintaining and enhancing the natural and cultural landscapes of the park units; conducting biological and ecological inventories; monitoring of resources; leading stewardship projects; and restoring native and cultural lands by removing invasive species and promoting native vegetation.

Specific duties will include:

  • Identifying and monitoring target species and populations of native and invasive plant species.
  • Assisting with providing invasive plant management control, using both manual and chemical techniques.
  • Collecting and maintaining field data, including GIS and field notes, using standard protocols.
  • Maintaining administrative documentation for resource management reporting.
  • Helping coordinate the park's involvement with the California Phenology Project, including collecting data, recruiting and training high school interns, and presenting programs to school groups.
  • Assisting with other biological inventory and monitoring projects including water quality, wildlife monitoring, and the use of programs such as photopoint.



Qualifications

Required:

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo (and must pass) required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Knowledge of invasive species, ecology and natural resource management
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to-and-from John Muir National Historic Site
  • Experience with hiking and navigation on uneven terrain
  • This position requires physical exertion such as walking long distances over hot, dry, and rough surfaces while carrying up to 40 lbs, and bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and capable of participating in physical labor on a regular basis
  • Willing and able to commit to a schedule of no less than 20 hours per week
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by the time they start their term or request a medical or religious exemption


Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as environmental science, natural resources, and other related fields
  • Knowledge of the National Park Service
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome - Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese are especially useful in this park
  • Strong desire to enter the field of natural resources as a career
