Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management is seeking Outdoor Recreation - Direct Hire Authority Interns interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of BLM. This internship opportunity is intended to provide individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds professional experience and exposure to public service and lands management.

A Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) internship is perhaps the most effective tool currently available to agencies seeking to expedite the hiring of qualified students in positions quickly. It is a competitive and rigorous project based internship that sets the foundation toward finding a full time position directly with a government agency. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ACE EPIC are looking to engage the next generation of conservation stewards from diverse and unique viewpoints with particular attention to African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic students. The program will raise awareness of our public lands, their accessibility, and the need for community involvement in their preservation.

**Please note: This opportunity is only available to current students at the end of the program. Unfortunately any students graduation before August 2023 do not qualify and cannot be considered.

Start Date: June 2023

End Date: August (11 weeks after start date)

Compensation: $700-$800/wk. Compensation is dependent on education level (Undergraduate/Graduate).

Relocation Reimbursement: We can reimburse up to $1000 of costs associated with moving to and from the internship location.

Housing Assistance: Housing assistance up to $175 per week is available upon request and demonstration of need.

El Centro, CA

This program will primarily consist of contacting the public and applicants to collect information and guide them through the application process. This project would be appropriate for a student studying Recreation or Tourism Management, Commercial Recreation, or any Business degree. This opportunity will increase on the job work experience and help enhance basic career skills such as organization, writing, detail, and communication. They will develop field skills like assessing and documenting site usage, violations, visitation, use of maps, field note methods, and data collection and preparation techniques. Previous experience with any or all of these skills would significantly enhance the student experience.

Idaho Falls, ID - Capacity Study

The proposed project involves implementing a previously developed reservation system for the campsites on the South Fork of the Snake River. The intern will work most directly with the Upper Snake FO to assist in completing the Recreation.gov requirements for reservations, analyze user statistics, and develop strategies for implementing capacity study decisions.

The intern would be tasked with implementing data from the capacity study, including the implementation of a reservation system for designated campsites along the river corridor, developing a business plan for the fee associated with the reservation system, and the development of outreach materials for public knowledge. The interdisciplinary nature of this project will provide the intern with valuable experience working for the Department of the Interior, instilling them with a working knowledge of the agency and providing the opportunity to develop critical thinking and real-world problem solving skills that will transfer into any position they may take at their time of eligibility. "

Idaho Falls, ID - GIS story map

The proposed project involves developing tools for the public to use to get to know the region and plan their trip. The GIS story map will help them become acquainted with the history of the dunes and river; and grow to have an appreciation for the resource the field office manages. The intern will work most directly with the ORP for the Upper Snake FO to assist in planning and outlining the story, gather and analyze data and information for the story, and finally to put everything together into the GIS story map. The interdisciplinary nature of this project will provide the intern with valuable experience working for the Department of the Interior, instilling them with a working knowledge of the agency and providing the opportunity to develop critical thinking and real-world problem solving skills that will transfer into any position they may take at their time of eligibility.

Dillon, MT

This internship would expose the candidate to a wide range of responsibilities within the Dillon Field Office recreation program. Focal areas this year include, helping an Outdoor Recreation Planner prepare for a Special Recreation Permit (SRP) audit, working on implementation of Wilderness Study Area projects, updating travel management plans and assisting two Outdoor Recreation Planners with other recreation planning efforts.

Prineville, OR

Project would include a variety of work focused on managing Wild and Scenic Rivers, Wilderness, and Wilderness Study Areas within the Prineville District BLM. Potential candidates would work both with BLM Recreation program staff and partners to meet monitoring targets and collect important data for future management. The primary goal of this intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation in positions such as an Outdoor Recreation Planner or Natural Resources Specialist. Interns will be assigned tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation in a real world work environment. The BLM Prineville District has responsibility for the management of 3 Wilderness Areas, 14 Wilderness Study Areas, and 7 Wild and Scenic Rivers which can provide a great introduction to National Conservation Lands Management. Having an intern that could work with BLM Staff and partners would allow the District to have a greater presence in these critical areas and complete vital monitoring work and data collection.

Lander, WY

Goals: Complete recreation site inspections and annual maintenance. Tasks include fence repair, water system startup, prepping host site for occupation, and general site maintenance. Complete annual monitoring of Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) and National Historic Trails (NHTs). Incumbent will follow pre-established monitoring protocol to collect data on the condition of the NHTs in the Lander Field Office and ensure WSA management and recreation use is in compliance with the BLM's WSA Management Policy. Assist with trail construction and maintenance at Johnny Behind the Rocks Special Recreation Management Area. The intern will complete standard maintenance activities such as drainage installation and out-sloping. In addition, the intern will assist with layout, design, and construction of new trails.


Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must be a Currently Enrolled Student. Recent graduates are not eligible for DHA positions. I.e. if you are graduating this year, before August 2023, you unfortunately do not qualify
  • At least 18 years of Age.
  • A valid driver's license, Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles).
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal history check
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
