American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Park History Program Media Fellow interested in evaluating and developing media content and material for internal and external audiences for the African American Civil Rights Network program.

Location: This position may be remote based on applicant's ability to confirm success in past remote work experiences. Travel is not required and computer equipment will be provided.

The Park History Program, begun in 1931, preserves and protects our nation's cultural and natural resources by conducting research on national parks and historic landmarks, park planning and special history studies, oral histories, and interpretive and management plans. The African American Civil Rights Network encompasses properties, facilities, and interpretive programs, all of which present a comprehensive narrative of the people, places, and events associated with African American Civil Rights movement in the United States. Position Overview: The ACE Fellow will support the Washington Office of Cultural Resources Partnership and Science Directorate and Park History Program with evaluating and developing media content and material for internal and external audiences for the African American Civil Rights Network program. Projects will be collaborative in nature and will involve cultural resources stories in parks, regions, and programs across the country. Duties will include:

  • Create and update web content based on existing content strategy and as directed by program managers using the NPS content management system
  • Developing social media products for program and national platforms
  • Assist with the preparation of materials and presentations to senior leadership
  • Research and write articles on a variety of subjects relating to Civil Rights
  • Seek out public domain images for use in online media
  • Produce digital conference and meeting materials
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings and calls
  • Plan regularly scheduled communications

Schedule: Full-time Monday to Friday; 8:30am - 5:00pm.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: ACE Fellow is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a gross living allowance of $1,200/week (federal and state taxes are withheld) to offset the costs of food, housing, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility, or view general information online here.

Housing: Housing and internet are the responsibility of the ACE Fellow and not provided by ACE or NPS.

Professional Development: ACE Fellow will have access to up to $1,110 to be used for eligible professional development and training expenses approved by ACE and NPS.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include NPS.gov content management training, government security, privacy, and records management training.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Broad knowledge of African American and/or U.S. Civil Rights history
  • Experience with media or graphic design
  • Ability to think critically and creatively
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a multi-cultural audience
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must submit a writing sample or other samples of work in application package
  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required three-part criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation
  • Members may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement or as defined by AmeriCorps

Preferred

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a Master's degree in Public History, African American History, American History, or related discipline
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
