Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management is seeking Park Ranger - Direct Hire Authority Interns interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of BLM. This internship opportunity is intended to provide individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds professional experience and exposure to public service and lands management.

A Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) internship is perhaps the most effective tool currently available to agencies seeking to expedite the hiring of qualified students in positions quickly. It is a competitive and rigorous project based internship that sets the foundation toward finding a full time position directly with a government agency. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ACE EPIC are looking to engage the next generation of conservation stewards from diverse and unique viewpoints with particular attention to African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic students. The program will raise awareness of our public lands, their accessibility, and the need for community involvement in their preservation.

Start Date: June 2023

End Date: August (11 weeks after start date)

Compensation: $700-$800/wk. Compensation is dependent on education level (Undergraduate/Graduate).

Relocation Reimbursement: We can reimburse up to $1000 of costs associated with moving to and from the internship location.

Housing Assistance: Housing assistance up to $175 per week is available upon request and demonstration of need.

Kingman, AZ

An intern would be responsible in the design of TrafX vehicle counter placement, placing the counters at strategic locations, then downloading and correlating data to be documented digitally for use in analyzing priority recreation use areas.

Arcata, CA

The primary goal for the DHA Internship (Indigenous Interpretation/Visual Information Specialist) is to work alongside BLM interpretative and cultural staff to create a 48'x 48' kiosk panel for the Mike Thompson Management Area, South Spit, Humboldt Bay. This graphic design centered internship requires that the intern has experience with Adobe Suite, Illustrator, and In-Design. The major theme of the interpretive panel would focus on the local indigenous culture of the Wiyot tribe who have inhabited the north coast for thousands of years. This position would require the intern to conduct research and identify unifying themes related to the natural and cultural history of the Wiyot Tribe. They would develop appropriate supportive graphics and write compelling interpretive narrative. The intern would work both internally and externally with subject matter experts in expansion and editing of the final product. The first four weeks would be 80% office based with a 20% field work component involving place-based orientation and project development. The remainder of the seven weeks would be office-based, using Adobe Suite to create and design the interpretive panel. The product must include engaging interpretive writing, photos, drawings and provocative themes to engage visitors.

El Centro, CA

The BLM El Centro Field Office (ECFO), California has an opportunity to introduce youth to careers in the BLM. This opportunity will be focused around Interpretation and Recreation. Specifically, the development of interpretive products and programs. The project will help increase access to outdoor recreation opportunities and services on our nation's public lands. Activities like biking, hiking, and OHV recreation provide physical and mental health benefits and allow Americans to more fully experience beautiful public lands. Park Rangers are an important part of the DOI team and support the public's enjoyment of land, water, and related resources for leisure use, while protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment. The development of a interpretive Junior Ranger booklet will be primary deliverable. The booklet will cover a variety of topics within the ECFO that are relevant to youth. The booklet will include a combination of recreation and resource activities. Research, design and development of a draft booklet will drive the 11-week internship. Additional opportunities for delivering and developing interpretive programs and products may also be available.

Alturas, CA

The Applegate Field Office has received ample interest from the public regarding the Barnes Grade area, which currently serves as a multi-use area near the town of Alturas. Barnes Grade provides the opportunity for visitors to take in a scenic perspective overlooking the town of Alturas and the valley below while enjoying a bike ride or a walk. The BLM is proposing a network of trails at Barnes Grade to address those interests. The project would require up to 4 miles of trail inventory, mapping, design, alignment, ground truthing, and implementation within roughly 60 acres that would require approval through public scoping and an interdisciplinary team. Duties Required: • The ability to perform physical labor, hiking, lifting and the use of hand tools, also an understanding of mobile mapping applications. • The capability to work independently for long periods of time, applying critical thinking, and the use of communication skills and interaction with a variety of groups, stakeholders, and government hierarchy. • Maintain and monitor site conditions, assist with general facility maintenance, and assist in the performance of day-to-day facility operations.

Carlsbad, NM

Assist the recreation department by surveying and inventorying existing trails at the Hackberry Lake Off-Highway Use Area. Since the 1980s a trail system has naturally evolved through public use. However, intensive oil and gas development over the past twenty years has caused unknown alterations to the trail system (pipelines cutting off trails, ROWs turning into new trails, etc.) requiring an on the ground survey of the SRMA trail system. The intern would do preliminary surveys of known but unrecorded trail alterations to gain a baseline of knowledge regarding the area. They would then develop a workflow in an ESRI application to assist in recording changes, developments, and issues present in the field. The majority of the time would be spent on the ground inventorying trails and uploading their findings into GIS databases. They would interact with volunteers and regular users of the trail system while on location and at designated times during the internship.

Las Vegas, NV

The Scenic Drive Trailhead Interpretive Sign Plan and Designated Trail Maintenance project proposal includes an array of experiences to learn about Red Rock Canyon National Conservation public lands. Interns will have an opportunity to create an interpretive signage plan for visitors to learn more about the geology, biology, wildlife, cultural and natural resources. We required creative interpretive signs along our 13 mile Scenic Loop Drive to keep our visitors engaged and educate them in their experience. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to conduct maintenance along trails with trailheads on the Scenic Loop Drive.

Las Vegas, NV

The Digital Interpretation Park Ranger Intern project proposal includes creating weekly digital media content, digitizing and archiving historical photographs and documents, and creating a digital library.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must be a Currently Enrolled Student. Recent graduates are not eligible for DHA positions. I.e. if you are graduating this year, before August 2023, you unfortunately do not qualify
  • At least 18 years of Age.
  • A valid driver's license, Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles).
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal history check
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
