Public Affairs - Southeastern States District Office

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Southeastern States District Office, is seeking one Public Affairs Member for the Southeastern States District Office, who will dedicate 52 weeks to assisting with all elements of the public relations role in association with the management of public lands and resources.

Start Date: ASAP (flexible for the right candidate)

End Date: 52 weeks after start date

* A 52-week commitment is required *

Location: Mississippi (with some travel)

The Southeastern States District Office, located in Flowood, Mississippi, is responsible for the stewardship of the public lands and resources under the jurisdiction of the BLM in 11 southeastern states adjoining and east of the Mississippi River. This includes Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Living Allowance: ACE member will receive a living allowance of $600/week for food and incidental expenses.

Housing Allowance: ACE member will receive a housing allowance of $600/month.

Public Land Corps Special Hiring Authority: ACE Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a special hiring authority upon completion of their term. Qualifying members who serve a "minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service on appropriate conservation projects as defined in the Public Lands Corps Act of 1993 and at least 120 hours were served on a project utilizing the Public Lands Corps legal authority." Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.

Project Background and Objectives: The Southeastern State District Office has an opportunity for professional development in public lands management and public affairs work across a broad spectrum of resources. This ACE position is geared toward providing valuable professional experience in the land-management field, specifically regarding public affairs in association with the management of the public lands and resources. Work will be office based with opportunities for to gain experience, learn about public lands, further their understanding and appreciation of natural and cultural resources. This opportunity will be focused on outreach, education, and interpretation program development, supporting external affair, and handling elements of public relations involved with NEPA, WH&B, Oil and Gas development, and Recreation.

Position Description: The ACE member will assist in public affairs tasks from managing and planning social media to developing communication plans, briefing papers, and marketing District programs, events and activities.

This position is ideal for a talented, well-rounded, enthusiastic, adaptable, and resourceful young professional interested in a career in public affairs and public land management. The ideal candidate should have demonstrated interest and/or education in communications, public or external affairs, environmental sciences, education, or public service, though all qualified applicants will receive careful consideration.

The member will receive on-the-job training and other skills related to the position. ACE and the BLM are committed to providing the most educational, rewarding, and challenging experience possible to best prepare participants for future careers in the stewardship of America's public lands.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Position is available to US Citizens and permanent residents only
  • Members must be 18 to 35 years old
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in a writing
  • Must have a strong work ethic, self-starter with the ability to work alone
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently, as well as participate effectively in collaborative effort
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation; personal vehicle is not required for the position, but strongly suggested
  • English proficiency is imperative. Other language proficiency is a plus
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required

Preferred:

  • Excellent writing, research, and organizational skills
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Advanced photography skills, including familiarity with DSLR style camera equipment
  • Experience using Facebook and/or other social media
  • Experience creating outreach media using Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat
  • Knowledge & skills in the principles of public affairs and communications
  • Ability to envision the goal and develop and complete projects independently to achieve goal
