Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management is seeking Realty - Direct Hire Authority Interns interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of BLM. This internship opportunity is intended to provide individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds professional experience and exposure to public service and lands management.

A Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) internship is perhaps the most effective tool currently available to agencies seeking to expedite the hiring of qualified students in positions quickly. It is a competitive and rigorous project based internship that sets the foundation toward finding a full time position directly with a government agency. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and ACE EPIC are looking to engage the next generation of conservation stewards from diverse and unique viewpoints with particular attention to African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic students. The program will raise awareness of our public lands, their accessibility, and the need for community involvement in their preservation.

**Please note: This opportunity is only available to current students at the end of the program. Unfortunately any students graduation before August 2023 do not qualify and cannot be considered.

Start Date: June 2023

End Date: August (11 weeks after start date)

Compensation: $700-$800/wk. Compensation is dependent on education level (Undergraduate/Graduate).

Relocation Reimbursement: We can reimburse up to $1000 of costs associated with moving to and from the internship location.

Housing Assistance: Housing assistance up to $175 per week is available upon request and demonstration of need.

Phoenix, AZ (In-Person)

The intern, working with the State Hydrology Lead, will research land records through various government entities to verify and prove ownership of groundwater and surface water sources filed with the Arizona Department of Water Rights on BLM managed lands. The goals of the internship are as follows: 1) Find any potential groundwater or surface water records filed under private, corporate, organizational, or state ownership with ADWR, but that are located on lands managed by the BLM in Arizona. 2) Where groundwater or surface water records are on BLM managed lands within Arizona, but not in the name of the United States, compile proof of ownership, which could include deeds, tax records, maps, and homestead records. 3) Organize the information found during the review process in an electronic database and file structure, to identify how many records were reviewed from ADWR, how many of those records had corrective paperwork organized and ready to file with ADWR, and how many of those records still needed ownership paperwork compiled.

Sacramento, CA (In-Person)

The property management specialist intern will assist a highly functional team with most aspects of property (personal and real) and fleet management. This will include receiving, disposal, record keeping, and administrative management of property on behalf of the Bureau of Land Management.

Las Cruces, NM (In-Person)

The intern will be assigned several entry-level right-of-way applications, which can be reasonably completed within the internship time frame. With minimal guidance from senior Realty staff, the intern will adjudicate the applications, enter project into BLM's systems (GIS, LR2000, and IT4RM) make cost-recovery determination, formulate cost recovery decision correspondence, coordinate scope the renewal with the local interdisciplinary team, complete the NEPA process, and formulate right-of-way offer and final decisions.

Casper, WY (In-Person)

The intern will assist the Realty and Lands Department of the CFO in the various realty items, issues, and unauthorized use. This includes but not limited too; unauthorized use of federal land discovered by realty specialist or found by different departments in the field office, researching theses unauthorized uses, conducting field visits, serializing a case file, working with an interdisciplinary team along side a realty specialist to get the issue resolved.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must be a Currently Enrolled Student. Recent graduates are not eligible for DHA positions. I.e. if you are graduating this year, before August 2023, you unfortunately do not qualify
  • At least 18 years of Age.
  • A valid driver's license, Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles).
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal history check
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
