Location Details/Description: Reedsport, Oregon

Loon Lake Recreation Area is located 20 miles east of Reedsport, Oregon. Situated in the heart of the Oregon Coastal Mountain Range, Loon Lake is a popular coastal recreation site hosting a premier campground with a warm, sandy beach surrounded by Douglas fir, Western hemlock, and Red cedar forests. Loon Lake covers 260 acres, is 2 miles long and 190' deep. During summer, the Lake is popular for boating, waterskiing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming, as well as relaxing on the sandy beaches along the lake and forest. The campground is located adjacent to the lake, accessible by trails. Loon Lake is open to day visitors as well as campground visitors.

Position Overview: The position opportunity is for recreation maintenance work and interpretation . The chief maintenance responsibilities will be cleaning campsites and day-use areas, cleaning vault toilets, weed eating, garbage removal, basic plumbing, carpentry, and will learn about potable water treatment systems. ACE Members will also be taking care of primitive camp sites in other locations, by use of vehicle, UTV, or on foot and monitoring recreation activities. Interpretive programming for the public at Loon Lake will focus on Junior Ranger Programs, Environmental Education, and guided walks/hikes offered at multiple times throughout the day. Staffing the entrance station alongside a seasonal ranger will involve providing orientation and answering questions for incoming visitors, checking campers in and out of the campground, as well as opening and closing gates. Additionally, this position may also contribute to special event planning and programming at New River Nature Center.

Will be interacting with the public on a daily basis and ACE Members will collaborate and communicate with other BLM maintenance employees, campground hosts, BLM law enforcement staff and Park Rangers.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to: This is a physically demanding position requiring walking long distance, standing for extended periods, and exposure to sun and high temperatures. This position is exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions. The position also requires frequent interactions with the public.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: At the time, Loon Lake Recreation Area will only be open Fridays -Sundays, for this reason, scheduling will include working weekends and holidays. Shifts are 8 hours long and begin as early as 8:00 AM and end as late as 10:00 PM. Should the site resume to 7 days a week of operations, schedules will change. Other days of work will involve prepping closed campsites for reopening, as well as, staffing and maintaining other recreation sites including New River Nature Center, Bastendorff Beach, and North Spit. The expected work schedule will be 5 days a week with 8-hour work days.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $550/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing will be provided at no cost by the BLM. Housing is shared occupancy with other ACE Members and/or BLM staff.

Relocation Allowance: ACE members will have access to up to $525 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Gear Allowance: ACE members will have up to $350 to spend on eligible gear purchases. Eligible gear for this position includes, [boots, backpack, outerwear, etc..], and must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.

Some specific training will include principles of Interpretation and Environmental Education, Recreation.gov reservation system, verbal judo, customer service, and de-escalation techniques.

Qualifications

ACE Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required byU.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

BLM Required

  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Proven ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals and demonstrate effective communication skills with the public of all ages and backgrounds;
  • Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle on steep, rough terrain, possibly pulling a trailer.
  • Pass a federal background check.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge and/or degree/coursework in natural and cultural resources, including biology, geology, archeology, ornithology, etc.
  • It is highly desirable to have a personal vehicle, as it is difficult to secure reliable rides for groceries, travel, or partake in other activities during off hours/days
  • Strong set of communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desire to be a public servant as a public-facing representative of a federal agency
