SummaryAmerican Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bridger-Teton National Forest is seeking 1 Forestry Technician (River Rangers) for 16 weeks. The participants will assist the Forest Service at the Jackson Ranger District. This opportunity will allow the River Rangers to work under the supervision and guidance of professional recreation and natural resource specialists performing a variety of duties related to recreation management including patrolling district waterways, trails, and/or roads, monitoring and implementation of on the ground recreation management plans and Wild and Scenic River Management plans. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic professionals with a background in Recreation Management or a closely related field, with a deep interest in jointly advancing their career goals and the stewardship of Wyoming's natural resources through purposeful fieldwork and teamwork toward common goals.

Location Details/Description: Bridger-Teton National Forest: Jackson Ranger District, Jackson, WY

The Bridger-Teton National Forest offers more than 3.4 million acres of public land or your outdoor recreation enjoyment. With its pristine watersheds, abundant wildlife and immense wildlands, the Bridger-Teton National Forest comprises a large part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48 United States. Offering nearly 1.2 million acres of designated Wilderness, over 3,000 miles of road and trail and thousands of miles of unspoiled rivers and streams.

Position Overview: This opportunity will allow the River Rangers to work under the supervision and guidance of professional recreation and natural resource specialists performing a variety of duties related to recreation management including patrolling district waterways, trails, and/or roads, monitoring and implementation of on the ground recreation management plans and Wild and Scenic River Management plans.

  • Operates an oar/paddle raft, kayak, or comparable watercraft on class III rapids and/or 4X4 vehicle and patrols river corridors and roads to ensure areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with Forest, Wilderness and/or River Management Plans.
  • Inspects recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and the management plans, public health, and safety of forest visitors.
  • Cleans both roadside and/or backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalizes sites where necessary to control use and prevent resource damage.
  • Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management and safety.
  • Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations.
  • Participates in record-keeping and collects, compiles, and summarizes information for recreation data management systems. Provides input for programming and planning.
  • Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails. Monitors the condition and use of trails.
  • Responds to river and land-based emergencies; assists law enforcement personnel to patrol unit roads, trails, or waterways.
  • Incumbents are required to wear FS uniform and drive government vehicles including trailers.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: Typical work week will be 8-10 hours/day, 4-5 days/week.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $650/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Remove if not provided; Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: ACE members will be accommodated in provided USFS housing for the duration of the term at a rate of $6.04/day.

Relocation Assistance: ACE members will have access to up to $500 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Gear Assistance: ACE members will have up to $200 to spend on eligible gear purchases.

Provided Training/Orientation: Seasonal employee orientation and Forest Service training will take place at Jackson Ranger District office. Additional training on Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, Swiftwater rescue/river running skills, Search and Rescue, Incident Command System, Radio Communications with local dispatch and Verbal Judo will also be provided throughout the season.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required byU.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of river recreation and skills required to be a certified Swift Water Rescue Technician and river hydraulics/skills in white water boating to safely negotiate Class I-III rapids in rafts or kayaks.
  • Knowledge of maintenance or river facilities both developed and undeveloped.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the USFS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the USFS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the USFS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to USFS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
