Summary

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Signing & Partnerships Fellow interested in dedicating 36 weeks to support the National Trails Office with trail development, historic preservation, and resource stewardship for the Pony Express and California National Historic Trails (NHTs), as well as the seven other NHTs NTIR administers as time allows. National Trails administers ten national historic trails and one historic highway that, combined, stretch for 25,000 miles across 24 states. The National Trails Office works with a diversity of partners to protect, develop, and promote these special places. Their staff of interdisciplinary experts assist community groups, private landowners, nonprofit organizations, tribes, and federal, state, county, and local agencies with site planning and design, on-the-ground trail mapping, educational opportunities, and identifying resources. Position Overview: ​​ The ACE Fellow will plan for and develop National Historic Trails (NHTs) through road/pedestrian signing along the California NHT, Pony Express NHT, and other NHTs as time allows. Duties will include:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of California and Pony Express National Historic Trail (NHT) sign plans for the state of California based on NTIR established process and sign system, either in close collaboration with project partners or independently.
  • Research, reach-out to, and work with the appropriate state and local road jurisdictions and land managers for the approval and installation of the signs
  • Research and assist in the purchasing of sign installation materials
  • Provide regular communication with a range of federal, state, non-profit organizations, and other trail partners to collaborate on signing and development activities
  • Assist trail partners and communities with development of draft sign plans, including use of online sign-planning tools
  • Assist NTIR staff and partners with other NHT-related activities as needed, including attendance at public events, preparation of social media content, and other office priorities

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: This position will be fully remote. The ACE Fellow is expected to work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday unless on travel/doing fieldwork when more than 40 hours may be worked. Any extra time worked over 40 hours while on travel can be taken off at a later date. For reference, a basic work week is 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m (Mountain Time), Monday through Friday, including an unpaid lunch period of 30 minutes. The fellow will have the opportunity to work with their NPS mentor to design a schedule that works best for them and the office within maxi flex schedule allowances.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: ACE Fellow is expected to contribute 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $515/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing is not provided by ACE or NPS and is the responsibility of the Fellow.

Travel/Training Allowance: Reimbursements not to exceed $4,270.91 will be provided for project-related travel, training, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history checks
  • Strong writing, communication, outreach, and organizational skills
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, and ability to multitask
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

  • Knowledge and experience using: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word and Excel

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of tablets, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain during travel/field days.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 10 lbs., ability to move up to 50 lbs.
  • Environmental: Mainly indoor, home office environment conditions. Outdoor conditions when conducting travel and site visits.
  • Travel: This position will require domestic travel.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: Outdoor and indoor conditions. When traveling or conducting site visits, the ACE member may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources. Environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates may exist when conducting fieldwork.
