Summary American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA), is seeking a Trails Technician to contribute to Tahoe trails alongside TRTA and US Forest Service Staff.

The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) system is a multi-use trail that receives half a million users annually. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) needs YOUR help to manage the increasing use of the TRT and ensure the fragile ecosystems the trail traverses stay protected for future generations to enjoy. This position provides the opportunity for a person who is passionate about the outdoors to hone their leadership skills while working with TRTA volunteers, gain field experience collecting information on outdoor recreational resources, and be a part of maintaining and constructing trails that enhance trails in the Tahoe Region and empower people to explore and protect the outdoors.

Location Details/Description: Lake Tahoe Region

Position Overview: Under the general supervision of the Trail Operations Manager, the Trails Technician will train, motivate, and lead volunteers to complete trail building and maintenance projects along the Tahoe Rim Trail and connector trails. The Trails Technician is responsible for implementing TRTA protocols, ensuring productive trail-based projects, coordinating with TRTA project leaders, and positively representing the TRTA in the field with the public. This position will also help gather, collect, and synthesize data on the Tahoe Rim Trail and associated infrastructure.

Position Responsibilities:

• Establish a safe, productive, and inclusive working environment for all volunteers.
• Perform trail construction and maintenance utilizing a variety of trail tools, including hand and power tools.
• Ensure all trail work is safely completed to TRTA/US Forest Service standards.
• Lead and manage trail crew workday projects at locations all around the Tahoe Rim Trail.
• Coordinate workdays and work camps with the Trail Operations Manager and project leaders.
• Manage volunteers with a variety of trail building and maintenance skill levels ranging from beginner to experienced.
• Assist with managing volunteer logistics to get to and from worksite locations. Assess, evaluate, and document trail construction and maintenance projects' progress, providing accurate and timely reports of work completed.
• Assist with assessing and reporting on trail conditions and infrastructure.
• When necessary, serve as a point of contact with partner and agency staff on specific projects

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $700/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE.

Relocation Allowance: ACE members will have access to up to $500.00 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Personal Vehicle Use: This position will require the use of a personal vehicle for work purposes to travel between job sites, though not on roads requiring high-clearance, 4x4 vehicles, or in locations considered "off-road." ACE will reimburse vehicle expenses at the GSA mileage rate of 65.5 cents per mile. The personal vehicle must be fully insured and in a safe and reliable working condition, which includes maintaining automobile liability insurance with a minimum $200,000 limit for their personal vehicle throughout the entire term of service with ACE and TRTA. The ACE Member will be required to provide ACE/TRTA with a copy of their personal automobile liability coverage that includes coverage limits.

Qualifications

Required:

• Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
• Current Wilderness First Aid (or higher) certification with CPR/AED, or receive certification before June 1, 2023
• Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
• Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
• A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
• A fully insured and operational personal vehicle
• Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history checkAbility to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
• ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

• Technical trail building and maintenance skills including proficiency with a variety of hand tools and dry-stone construction techniques
• Interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain a positive camaraderie among the trail crew.
• Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment often with minimal supervision, to complete project goals
• Experience with working in the backcountry and LNT skills
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with GIS, Trimble, or other tools for collecting data out in the field
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources
