ACE EPIC USFS (PR): El Yunque National Forest, Visitor Information Services

Summary:American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the El Yunque National Forest, is seeking three VIS Technicians for 52 weeks (1 year) to support in providing visitors with standardized information, education and interpretive services. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic professionals with a background in natural resources, environmental education, or a closely related field, with a deep interest in jointly advancing their career goals and the stewardship goals of the United States Forest Service.


Start Date: Mid December 2022 (may have some flexibility for the right candidate)

End Date: 52 weeks after start

Location: El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico

The El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse of the national forests hosting hundreds of animal and plant species, some of which are found only here.

Living Allowance: The member should anticipate serving 40 hrs/wk, with potential to work holidays and weekends. The Member will receive a living allowance of $600/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly.


Housing: Members will be responsible to find their own housing.

Position Description:

Primary duties include visitor management practices, processes, methods, and procedures that include the following:


1) Informs the public of Forest Service recreation rules and regulations, traffic control, accident prevention, campsites and picnic area operations, visitor information services, reservation operation (recreation.gov) and miscellaneous recreation program activities.


2) Answers routine questions that require knowledge of a limited variety of facts, events, circumstances, personalities, and natural characteristics identified with the site.


3) Checks the usage and condition of public use areas, trails, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons. Collects, compiles, and reports routine visitor and resource use statistics.


4) Performs routine daily opening and closing procedures and assists with general tasks.

5) Position may operate a government vehicle in daily operations.

6) Assist with recreation and facility maintenance as scheduled.

7) Performs other duties as assigned.

Training Provided:

Support and training will be provided by the US Forest Service, but a foundational knowledge of information services, public service, and Forest Service culture and general practices, is expected.

Project Environment:

The work consists of performing a variety of standardized tasks in support of natural resource-dependent recreational programs. This work will be performed primarily outside in varying weather conditions, with long periods of standing or walking, hiking and occasionally moderate to heavy lifting. Interested applicants should possess a high level of physical fitness.

Qualifications:Applicants should have an interest in Natural Resources, Environmental Education, or related fields, while all degrees are welcome. Candidates with Master's Degrees and an interest in a career in public lands management are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants without a college degree who have equivalent work experience, and a desire to learn and grow professionally, are encouraged to apply. Required:

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.

Preferred:

  • Fluent in Spanish.
